POWER UP, Professional Organization of Women in Entertainment Reaching Up, was announced on October 11, 2000, (National Coming Out Day) in Daily Variety’s first-ever “Gays in Hollywood” issue, by founder and executive director Stacy Codikow and co-founder Amy Shomer. The mission is to promote the visibility and integration of gay women in entertainment, the arts, and all forms of media. The members are women and men, gay and straight, who share a singular purpose – to promote diversity by supporting our mission.
History:
Nov 2002 at the 2nd Annual Power Premiere - Jerry Offsay Showtime president announces the creation and order for the L word (then Earthlings) Daily Variety and Hollywood Reporter run this info the next day.
We viewed the pilot and gave comments to Showtime. We even voted for the L word title at the request of Ilene Chaiken.
The cast has been at our Annual Power Premiere in 2002, 2003 and know 2004.
We co-hosted the premiere of the L word at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival.
Director Rose Troche and writer actress Guin Turner are POWER UP members.
We have held 2 workshops with L Word cast and writers
POWER UP film grantee, Angela Robinson (DEBS) was hired to write on the L word after Ilene saw her short (DEBS) at our annual Power Premiere.
