WHEN FANS AND STARS MEET by Michelle Thompson (aka Seahurst)

L Word cast meet their Fans!

England... France... Germany... Italy... Austria... Wales... Russia... Scotland...Malta... Ireland... Holland... Spain... United States. Women from these thirteen countries, and more, traveled by train, plane,  automobile, and boat, converging on London England. Their reason? The opportunity to meet up close and in person, people that play some of their favorite characters, from their favorite television show...The L Word. And, these thirteen countries, are just the ones I personally know about. I have no doubt that other countries were proudly represented, as well, and I apologize for not knowing who you are.

It was a sight to behold. Hundreds of lesbians...and a few men, all gathered at the Thistle Hotel outside of London...and in one magical moment, they went from being attorneys, construction workers, customer service reps, medical assistants, teachers... mothers, to being screaming, whistling, stomping, giggling fans... making the kind of noise that reminds me of watching old footage of when the Beatles first arrived in the United States. I was so overwhelmed by the noise...the pure excitement that was bouncing off the walls and ceiling. I can’t imagine what it would be like to be the object of that much raw energy...WOW!!!

Since Tbsaver is doing a great job of writing about the cast and the convention itself, I wanted to write about some of the women I met at this L Word convention... taking place over 5,000 miles from where the show is actually filmed. However, since I can’t resist,  I wanted to give you my short take on meeting each one of the cast members who attended.

Eric Mabius - Reserved in stature, but not in personality. He has no hurried motions... everything is slow and steady. Very thoughtful in his responses to questions. When signing my program, he remembered that I had asked a question during his Q&A, and thanked me for asking such a good question. Such a charmer!

Meredith Mcgeachie - Very nice and approachable. Both smart and funny. I loved to hear her talk about Tonya, and who she thought Tonya was as a person. She has such great insight into this complex character! I described Tonya as being “lovingly annoying”, and have always thought that Meredith was spot on in her portrayal of her. I hope that after the convention Meredith understands, that because of who she is as a person, that her Q&A’s were, for me anyway, one of the highlights of the weekend.

Anne Ramsay - Oh my God! If Ann Ramsay wasn’t on my radar before this weekend, she sure as hell is now!! This woman has more style in one of her over-sized shirt cuffs than I do in my whole closet...wait, forget that...my whole house!! Her energy is warm and inviting...when taking pictures, she touched you with both ease, and a certain sensualness. I was drawn to her very much, yet knew that standing next to her for a photo, would expose to the world just how totally un-hip I really am. I wonder if she would give me lessons?

Rachel Shelley - What a delight this woman is! Rachel seemed to me, to be kind of like the pseudo host for the weekend, since it took place in England. She was totally accommodating to everyone. Patient, interested in what you had to say. Funny, warm... very inviting... you just wanted to spend more time getting to know her, Rachel Shelley, rather than talking about Helena. She too remembered I had asked a question during the Q&A, and even remembered what the question was... taking the time to discuss it with me more, even though there was a line of people waiting for her autograph. An absolutely lovely woman.

Laurel Holloman - Thud! Ok, wait... let me pick myself back up after my daydream about getting my picture taken with LH... a daydream that runs on a constant loop in my brain!! Ok, a little exaggeration... but not much! Laurel was more gracious, more... well, how do I explain her presence at the convention? Did you ever have a teacher at school that everyone was just drawn to? A classmate that everyone wanted to be friends with? A favorite aunt, who ALL the cousins, as well as the other aunts and uncles wanted attention from? A person who, just by their presence draws people to them? That was LH at the convention. For a woman who was jet-lagged, she was full of energy, engaging, funny, smart... so generous with her time and... herself. I was so nervous getting my picture taken with her, yet she quietly spoke with me, calming me down.

It’s funny, you would think that as a fan, I would be the one who would want to talk to the cast members, try to keep their attention as long as possible...yet in reality, I was so star-struck, I just wanted to get a picture, or an autograph, and run!! If it hadn’t been for their kindness, I would have done just that. Every single one of them spoke with me, asked me questions, looked me in the eye... put an arm around me. I have never been to a convention before... but, I wonder if, because of the generosity of these five people, I am now ruined for any other convention?

Now, besides meeting the cast, the convention for me was a wonderful opportunity to meet women from all over the world. I didn’t introduce myself to as many women as I would have liked, but that is only because, unlike Laurel Holloman, my jet lag took over my body with a vengeance. It was my first trip abroad, and I was a walking zombie for most of the weekend... grabbing a nap in the afternoon, while laying wide awake in the middle of the night...which makes Laurel Holloman’s behavior almost heroic-like to me. How she was able to do all that she did, after just flying in was beyond me.

However, the women I did meet were wonderful. First, I will start by saying how great it was to meet BetteAndTinaForever! Her story Out of The Closet, has given me a lot of entertainment from the very first chapter. She has such a curiosity about anything to do with The L Word, and a memory that is almost scary at times! I’m not kidding... whether we were talking about a certain scene in the show, or a particular chapter in fan fic, she remembered everything!! I have always been attracted to women who are curious...and BetteAndTinaForever is VERY curious when it comes to The L Word! It was fun to watch...and she was a joy to talk with.

I met several other members of this site.... all of whom were fun to talk with. And, as for the women from England...you were all so wonderful, inviting me come visit you... I will have no shortage of places to explore while here in England!! Bristol, Liverpool, Eastbourne, London,  The Fox bar in Birmingham, etc! Thank you for that... it truly meant a lot.
