  SEASON 4???

IT'S IN YOUR HANDS--those of you who do not subscribe to Showtime but are able to.

Listen to Jennifer Beals (Advocate interview):

"I realize that [the L word] has sort of this cult aspect where people will go to each other's houses to watch the show. But in order for Showtime to realize truly how popular the show is, people need to get Showtime . . . I would propose that people get Showtime and rotate the houses where they got to watch. I think it would be enormously helpful for the longevity of the show."

Love it or hate it, The L Word is the only show on television that features lesbians.

Do you want more lesbian shows? Then The L Word must succeed, whether you like the show or want to scream at your screen when it's on. If not, network executives will not consider running other lesbian-oriented shows.

Jennifer Beals understands there is a problem in the lesbian community: We are cheap. We have a history of pot lucks and sharing books. We cannot continue with our penny-pinching ways and expect to have more lesbian TV shows.  We at L-word.com are addressing this problem and making a call to action  to the women in the world who are able to subscribe to Showtime and receive the show:

1) Stop the downloading! L-word.com deletes all posts about downloading. Sorry to those in countries that can't get it, but the reality is there are women in the United States--many women!--who can get it and who can afford yet they choose to CHEAP OUT and watch it with a bunch of friends at one person's house.

2) Subscribe to Showtime! We challenge everyone who reads this editorial to get two friends to sign up for Showtime. Have them tell their cable carrier they are subscribing for The L Word. We must put our money where our convictions are. If we want lesbian programming, we must subscribe to Showtime. If you're lucky enough to have access, subscribe to Here and Logo and Q.  A Showtime subscription costs less than 50 cents a day. Give up one Starbucks latte, and you'll pay for a week's worth of Showtime.

3) You want lesbian books? BUY THEM. Stop giving them to your friends so that 10 of you read the same book. You are putting lesbian publishers and writers out of business.

4) You want lesbian music? BUY THEIR CDs and stop downloading and copying for each other.

5) You want lesbian magazines and web sites? SUPPORT THE ADVERTISERS who advertise to lesbians.

It is time for lesbians to put their MONEY where their convictions are, or we'll lose our only TV program, the same way we're losing all our bookstores.

Now, we have a call to action for the cast and crew of the L word and Showtime Networks: Support the small, independent, lesbian bookstores! Help them help you! Do your DVD signings there. Give them discounts so that they can compete with Amazon.com and Best Buy. Every DVD signing to date has been at a major chain store (FYE, Best Buy, etc.). Help bring business to the lesbian businesses.

Whether there will be a season 4, 5, 6, or nothing more is all in the hands of those of you who CAN subscribe. Do it. If not, don't expect another lesbian show to hit a major network or cable company any time in the near future. Why should they put money into shows that lesbians won't even pay for?

Comments: Maybe the misfortune of this show is; it's being aired by Showtime.. Yes not the biggest TV company in USA, yes even here in Turkish Showtime it is same (yeah we have here too but not L word, they show stuff from 80's *rolling eyes*). If it was a bigger network i am sure the quality of this show would improve in every way possible. BUT as I wrote before in l-word.com forums. If you want this to happen, we should all SUPPORT. Not in usa? can't subscribe? then at least send mail and show them you are supporting. Ratings are VERY important my friends. Think of yourselves.. Would you keep airing a tv show if it was getting low ratings? Personally I wouldn't. If we want more lesbian serials or movies we MUST keep supporting and stand behind it. Okay lets criticise till the end but even if we hate it lets stand behind it and show it to people who are at top of this business that lesbian related stuff is very profitable! That is the ONLY way to convince people who are in this business. I am so sick of 1 minute or 30 seconds lesbian wanna be scenes in other serials and movies. I want something more, not for myself only but for next generation of lesbians. We were always here, we will always be! We want more visibility on tv! - well.. actually everywhere we want it ;)Showtime keeps putting money into Lesbian related shows? Then YES to Showtime!

Not a fight from someone insecure, jilted, defensive...how about these comments I found off the home page: "If you are currently a member or host of a viewing group and are willing to be filmed in the immediate months to come (remember, season three wraps up in March), please contact me!"What is a "viewing group?" Is that along the same lines of a "viewing group" for one of those reality TV island shows with that naked gay man who cheated out the IRS when he won? What's a "viewing group? Been back & forth in Europe & the states...must have missed that NY Times puzzle...heheheheee

Now lets see that other side :D That request came from QTelevision (another cable tv for gay people). They are filming a documentery about the show (the L word) And if i am not wrong it will mainly be about how lebians and the l word show related etc. I also didn't understand it well at the begining when we recieved that request to announce it on l-word.com but later they explained. Well lets say it simple; that text came from them and on request we published it :D but I agree with you it is not explanatory at all :D WHATEVER.. lets not get off topic, the subject here; supporting the show we can discuss that other subject later sister ;) btw I want to say something to all of those subscribers; I don't know about Showtime but you are all my hero!! :D

Comments: RE the LWord.com commentary about lesbians buying Showtime so that the LWord will continue to exist...I appreciate the plee--I am one who has Showtime only because of the LWord and I will cancel it when the season is over as I do every year. But I want to say that if lesbians being represented on television is dependent on whether or not we get Showtime then there is a bigger problem that we need to address. And lets not forget--women suffer from poverty the most--if women had more income they would spend more. Lastly, I feel disappointed that the L Word.com writers would put the age old tradition of women sharing resources (potlucks, books and dvds, oh my!) in a negative light. Isn't sharing resources a value that we want to hold on to especially in times where so many have so little???I think a better thing would be if Showtime would step up to the plate as a premium channel and give lesbians what they want. Showtime 2 for 1 for any L Word watching/loving lesbian who can prove they are just that. Don't get me wrong--I love the L Word. My friends worry how much I process and watch the shows (on my paid for Showtime) but I just hope that folks have a bit more compassion for some of the reasons why women/lesbians may not be able to put buying Showtime at the top of their lists. With respect, in sisterhood,Thesbian009 aka Sarah in Oakland, CA

The exposure that the program would have had in the UK if shown on main stream tv would have been outstanding. If we have to put our money where our heart is, so do 'Showtime'.

We have only seen Season One and I´ve asked when they will air Second Season and got this answer: Sometimes in 2006!! But I´ve purchased S1 and S2 from Amazon and also the CD. I´ve also subcribed to Velvet Park Magazine, so one can not say that my pockets are deep when it comes to Gay (I hate the word Lesbian) products. Therefore I ask this question. WHY on earth do we have to wait soooo long for the DVD´s and also why can´t they just go ON with the show, I think it´s to long time between Series so no wonder one tries to get their hands on every interview or scripts, WE ARE WAITING!! SO GET ON WITH THE SHOW!! And what is this Tina into men! Is she recovering from an ilness? I don´t know what TLW writers are going with this!

I didn't get to watch all of TLW's first season because of the birth of my first grandchild, so I purchased the DVD's, and have watched them over 50 times. I love the show. I have also purchased the second season and watch them too. I am now busy with my TWO grandbabies and cannot watch it when it is on so I tape it and watch it when I get home. I never get tired of seeing the beautiful actors in the show. Especially the beautiful Jennifer Beals. I have been following her career since Flashdance back in 1983. She's looking better with age. Her acting ability just blows me away. She is so versitile. She can make you believe in everything she portrays. Her eyes just seem to say everything without speaking a word. For Showtime to deny their viewers of this would be a travisty. They would surely lose many subscribers. I, as one, will cancel Showtime if they cancel the show. I hope many others wil voice their thoughts on this to Showtime. I recently told my friend about TLW and she subscribed. Now, she said she will cancel too. Good luck!!!!

Comments: I'm a relative newcomer to The L Word phenomenon and last I checked, I'm straight :). This call to arms, though primarily directed towards lesbians, should also apply to people from all walks of life who truly love this ground-breaking series. The sad reality is that the fate of any television show rests on viewer ratings. For those who are able to subscribe to Showtime (ST), let's do what we can to heed Jennifer Beal's proposal. As mentioned, The L Word is all new to me. I recently happened upon several previous season episodes while at a friend's house. Surely enough, I was instantly hooked. I plan on subscribing to ST primarily for The L Word which I will make a point to mention to the ST Rep.Lastly, a want to extend a quick & genuine shout-out to the cast & crew for giving us such great entertainment! Who knows ... maybe one day a Pacific Islander character will be introduced indulging in the competitive/leisure activity of surfing. Okay, I'm Hawaiian born so this is just a bit of wishful thinking on my part ... Bring it on!!!

Comments: I have been giving the renewal of season 4 a lot of thought and I have to say I love JB and the cast of this show. They are, at the moment, the only reason I even bother to show any form of support for this show by buying the DVD's (of poor quality) when released. Based on conversations that I have had with my friends I have come to the following conclusion. It is a tad unrealistic to now place the renewal of this show solely on the backs of the lesbian community. I have to ask what happened to the big claims expressed by IC and showtime that this show is intended to attract a cross over audience. Don't these people also need to be addressed? Or do they all have subsriptions to showtime? Here's a novel idea, and this one might just work, improve the quality of the show and viewers will come despite the content. Personally I have increasingly become disgruntled with the show and it's quality (shoddy writing , useless guest stars that cost money and a severe lack of continuity). In my opinion the author of this piece, JB and the exec's at showtime should be more concerned with the amount of viewers being driven to the point of insanity every Sunday and are threathening to cancel their subscription. Even the cast is becoming increasingly dejected. All television is a form of give and take between creators and fans. If Showtime and IC can't be bothered to give. Why should we the lesbians? If I lived in the States I would probably support the show for the incredible cast, but thats it. I could not be bothered to do it for the fact that it's even slightly interesting television or that it represents the lesbian community. Because if our representations depends on this show or whether or not showtime renews this show we have bigger issues on our hands. And these are the issues that need to be addressed. Message to the author: The survival of the L Word should not be whether or not a million people i.e. lesbians subscribe to Showtime it should be on the quality of the show.

I don't want HBO, Cinnemax and all those other shows.... if you give some people the option to subscribe to SHOWTIME ONLY for 15 bux a month, I would do it... but I'm not payin $50 extra a month just to watch 1 show... no matter how much I love it.

Comments: Is there any way at all to get The LWORD on the internet via some sort of paying service? I would subscribe in a sec and I am sure many others from the rest of the world would too. So many of us can't access TLW through the proper channels. If we could, I think the support we could throw behind The L Word would keep the show running for many more years to come.

Comments: I live in the uk and cant even get on to the showtime web site so how do they expect to keep their international audience happy. I have however bought s1 and s2 dvds and the soundtracks. The show has a huge international following so I hope showtime take that into consideration and make a s4, 5, 6 and more. Maybe if thet sold the show to more widely available channels (Living, hello!!???) they may see more money from it!

Have been telling folks about it for the past few months. And at least two of my friends have subscribed as a result. I will keep pushing. Love TLW.

Comments: I have mixed feelings about TLW. I loved season one. Half way through season two things just went sour. The beginning of season three has me completely insulted by the way Tina and Bette are being portrayed as same sex parents (sorry Ms Beals). However, I realize that GLBT's are still in their infancy stage of media representation. Therefore, I subscribe to Showtime to pay for the right to complain that I want something better then TLW to turn on when I get home after a long hard day of going against the grain.

But also, make it available to download OFFICIALLY on the net and you'll have much more people buying it even before it comes out on dvd !I admit to use p2p to see the episodes before they come out on dvd ...blame me if you want, but i do my share by bying it officially after :pAlso, its impossible for months now to post in, and read the showtime official forums from a non US location ..and that is wrong. If you want your audience (in the large sense of the term) to keep supporting it, make the forum accessible for all, and not only for american people !

Comments: hi girls, I say the same as Mynona. I´m from Brazil so I can´t subscribe Showtime. But I subscribe Warner Channel that airs it here. But TLW is years late in Brazil and, believe it or not, it was censored by Warner the first time it was on air. But brazilian girls got togheter, complained and managed to get the real thing. But we just could do it because many of us had already seen it on the Internet and notice many scenes were missing. Just as Mynona I download the episodes (I can´t tank enough people who put then on the net), but I always buy then on DVD as soons as possible, the same with the CDs. I couldn´t believe when I read here "Sorry to those in countries that can't get it, but the reality is there are women in the United States". Just like that??? Sorry but get out of here?? Can´t you see that togheter we are stronger and that there are lesbians outside the USA that desire TLW as much as you? Need money? SELL IT ON THE INTERNET. I´m sure people will buy it. I support all gay and lesbian iniciative on the media I can.

Frickin Bette reeled me back in! I'm going to Comcast and pickin up the Showtime subscription again. By the way it costs me allot more then 5o cents a day to subscribe.Instead of clownin lesbians for being frugal why doesn't Showtime hire lesbians to do their budget. Apparently they need us to handle their marketing as well...just a hint Showtime...make L Word purchasable on the Web...I dunno iTunes video maybe???

Comments: In my area, I had to order a "package" to get the Showtime channel. Since my internet access is tied in with my cable access, my bill is well over $90 a month. I can afford it, but many people can't. I can't blame them for borrowing tapes or watching at a friends house. I think this smells a bit like blackmail to force people to purchase a premium channel "or else". Hey, it's great to have a show that's almost exclusively about lesbians but to say that no other tv/cable channel will be in any hurry to produce anything similar to TLW will surely backfire on those who use such a threat. The "paying" customers, as well as the folks who have watched the show by other means are the same people who have made TLW one of the most popular shows in Showtime's history. Showtime needs to make money, just like the rest of us. Those of us who can afford "frivolous" expenditures like cable tv will continue to do so and those of us that can't should not be made to feel guilty for watching the show at a friend's house.

This show makes me feel like being in love with other women is acceptable and when i watch i am not ashamed of who i am. This show is a positive part of showing girls as well as women that it is ok to be different. The names Pam Greir and Jennifer Beals pulled me into the show and the others are bonuses, they all compliment each other. Please give the people that are sleeping on a great show a chance to check it out and u will not be sorry.

Comments: Hey Mercy23! SHO is taking me to the poorhouse too! My monthly bill is $164.00 (including internet access, digital tier [necessary for SHO in my area] and DVR) - and that is SEVERAL lattes per day, thank you. ...but I grin and bear it for these three months because NOW is the time to support this type of programming. The L Word may not be perfection, but it employs MANY women as actors, writers, producers, etc. Have you noticed the many veteran women actors that have been 'written off' by mainstream TV/Movies (over 40 years old) who are getting guest roles on this show? Have you noticed the diversity of color in the characters? What about all the women-centric music you've been exposed to that you didn't even know existed (Jane Siberry, Ferron )...Come on, sisters, make a SHOwing! Eat rice for the next three months if you have to! Stay home from the bars! Don't let it be said that you did nothing and the TLW went down without your support! You know you love it - why are you on this site with me everyday? Don't make me have to come to each of your houses personally to get a donation! If I do, I'll be staying for that brown rice and tofu dinner!...and how could you turn a babe like JB down when she asks you for somethin, somethin...

Comments: BTW - I did not mean to imply that SHO will cost you that much in your area. My friends in other areas pay much, much less. Time-Warner just has us by the b...s (Hey Moira!) here. Comments: @mercy23, (just explaining nothing against your words) I can assure you this article has nothing to do with blackmailing and has no connection with showtime in anyway (we complain about the same things which all of you complain already :)) This "CALL" is for those who CAN AFFORD and who CAN SUPPORT but won't do so. Just an example; now almost all around the world Turkish credit cards considered as "not reliable" you can not order anything through internet, but there are people who found a way and "purchased" the L word DVDs (YES I know there are thousands of people from other countries who are doing this - i am just giving the closest example). The point is if you have enough income to spend on this show then don't think about it even for a second. For those who can not afford, well no one has right to say anything to those people already. Believe me those people who really cannot afford subscribing to this show are doing their best to spread the word ;) This commentary not a piece written to L-word.com users it's just a reaction to something we see. Not about showtime, not about fans. Now if a software company was saying NO CRACKS NO PATCHES NO WAREZ then they would be blackmailing people? I don't think so :)

Comments: Cowgirl-My comment wasn't specifically aimed at the author of this article - but to the network(s), like Showtime. To see a show like TLW, one must have cable/satellite access and will typically be forced to buy a "package" deal in order to get the one channel they want to view. TLW has a great many fans but there's no guarantee that it will stay on the air for any length of time. Consider multiple award winning West Wing and Will and Grace - their viewership fell below an average of 10 million viewers - and both have now been cancelled. I enjoy watching TLW but don't see it as a contender for any major mainstream awards (which could generate more money for Showtime) and I sincerely wonder if a few thousand more subscribers would make that much difference to Showtime when it comes to renewing TLW? Especially if those new subscribers weren't part of the Nielsen rating polls. What I want from Showtime is a guarantee that if they were to get more subscribers - specifically viewers of TLW, that they will renew the show for at least another 3 years. Then I'll be the first in line to rally friends and family to subscribe!:-)

I honestly thought that IC came back this season, now after reading all these spoilers etc, she's outta there again!!!!!!!!! If these spoilers turn out to be true, me and my friends (we all have Showtime just for the show), have decided that we're gonna give it up...PERMANENTLY!!!!!!!!!! We're upset and hurt that IC is not lettting B & T work out there differences, and letting T follow her feelings, and hopefully B will find some much deserved love with some one new. Comments: If I could get premium stations and I could afford it, that's one thing, but those 2 things aren't true. Lesbians aren't cheap, they are women, and women are not the riches people on the planet. If women are truly getting together to watch the show, you think that's cheap? I think it's great that women are actually getting together! It's called socializing, sharing, considering each other. I know at least 4 women friends who have Showtime and watch the show--all separately, as in, no 'cheap' gatherings, so I guess that's good for people who think the mighty individual is the way to go... Cable tv is outrageously priced and yes, a lot of women cannot afford to sacrifice a neccesity for a luxury. We are not all the L Word wonder femmes without a $ care in the world.

Comments: I'm from Holland and I'm thankful that The L Word is shown on normal TV, just like any other show. The second season has just started and I'm sure the third season will be aired next year. As opposed to my beloved liberal country (don't take it to patriotically!), Germany is one of a few countries, if not the only one (?!) that hasn't even aired season 1 yet! I've been living in this country for over 6 years and am shocked by its conservative and narrowminded views on society in many ways. They are working on becoming the US of Europe, but if they want to be the centre of european life, they have to open up a bit on a human and personal level. Holland is a small country, but is way ahead for that matter. To me it seems, the show deliberately has been aired pretty soon after it came out in the US, simply because it belongs to life, the content of the series belongs to life, just as any other series that represent reallife characters. I don't think it has been such an issue to air it as it obviously does in good ol' Germany. These TV channels hide behind their statements about ratings and their financial interests, as if they can't imagine that a lot of people want to see some aspect of themselves represented on TV for once in their lives. I vaguely heard or read about The L Word 2 years ago and couldn't wait to see it. By now I have seen both season 1 & 2 and the 2 first episodes of season 3. I have to admit I downloaded season 2 and I will do the same for season 3, just because I can't wait till finally it will be aired in Germany. But I already bought season 1 on DVD and I definitely will for season 2 & 3. Same for all the next 100 seasons, as I do too wanna see granny Bette!Thanx to Ilene Chaiken and the entire cast of The L Word for representing people in all their unique and lovely aspects!Ilselovely_lonestar@yahoo.com
