Ribbon of Hope Celebration - a Decade of History

For ten years the Television Academy and its Television Cares committee have presented “Ribbon of Hope” awards, honoring television programming committed to AIDS awareness, education, and action. “Ribbon of Hope” was named after the iconic red ribbon, which became a global symbol in the fight against AIDS.

In addition to television programming nominations, “Ribbon of Hope” also presents a Special Award to a corporation, non-profit, or individual who fully understands the power of television and uses it to further their commitment to the causes of awareness, prevention, and treatment.

On Wednesday, November 29, 2006, the 10th annual “Ribbon of Hope Celebration” acknowledged those within the television medium who have contributed to responsible programming with regards to educating and raising public awareness of AIDS on what is the 25th anniversary of the disease. This year’s celebration also included an additional award for efforts made on behalf of Breast Cancer Awareness.

The event was held at the Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (5230 Lankershim Blvd, North Hollywood).

This year’s “Ribbon of Hope Celebration” was presented by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and its Television Cares committee and was taped live by here!, America’s premium gay television network and will be edited for later broadcast exclusively across here!’s nationwide cable and satellite providers. This will be the first ever “Ribbon of Hope” to be telecasted.

Paul Colichman, co-founder and CEO of here! Network, said, “Since the nation’s first case of AIDS was diagnosed 25 years ago at UCLA Medical Center, this pandemic continues to plague humanity. Tonight we salute those who continue to illuminate the disease and fight for its extinction. Tonight we come together to find strength and resources to march forward. Tonight is an evening of hope.”

Red carpet arrivals

Around 6 p.m. the celebrities began to arrive one by one, pose for the photos, and give interviews to several magazines and newspapers, as well as to here! Network. Among the participants of the event there were personalities in recognized television programs and shows, such as Frontline, Primetime, General Hospital, The L Word, The Shield, Dante’s Cove and The O.C. as well as entertainers, executive producers, writers, and other AIDS activists.

Interviews (WARNING: contains minor spoilers for season 4 of The L Word)

Ilene Chaiken, Kate Moennig, Laurel Holloman, and Leisha Hailey were interviewed by here! They discussed Dana’s breast cancer story and what did it meant for them and for the show to be singled out and nominated for an award and how that storyline affected them.

TLW crew also discussed some upcoming stories for Season 4. Kate Moenning was asked if we will see Shane in monogamous relationship. Kate replied, “Maybe, probably (then she looked at Ilene), I don’t know, what do you think?” Ilene said, “You know…” as Kate interrupted, “I don’t know, but I hate to see Shane…I hope not, Shane is not too monogamous.” Ilene said, “My assumption about Shane because it’s never gonna last whatever it is…Shane went through a lot of changes, she might try monogamy for a while, but I’m not sure that she really has it in her to stay like that forever.”

Leisha Hailey was asked about Alice, and she replied while glancing at Chaiken once in a while, “Something really great happens to me this year…in the middle of the season, but I don’t want to give that away…but it’s fantastic.”

Laurel Holloman was asked if anything exciting like that will happen to her and Laurel replied, “I don’t know, I have to redeem myself. Tina has big problems.” Kate said, “You know, Tina makes up for that in a big way, in a big big way.” Laurel continued, “Yeah, I have a lot of making up to do.” Kate added, “Yeah, you make it up.” Ilene said, “…I don’t know what that heterosexual story was but…” and they all laughed and the interview was over. Comments: I'm too lazy to read the whole thing (sorry! LOL) but I was REALLY glad to see you got to speak to a Showtime rep about the DVDs sucking so badly. Hopefully S4 will have a better set. Thanks for taking time to attend the event and give a report! =)

Comments: Good article pal! I especially liked the fact that you mentioned other networks and documentaries, what I didn't like is that the girls glance at IC before answering any question, they're not 4 years old, they won't give away any important detail!!

Comments: Come on IC....bring Bette and Tina back together. This is bordering on ridiculous that there cannot be at least one sustaining relationship on the show. It IS possible, and yet that is not shown AT ALL. In my opinion, it would have been nice to fully appreciate why Bette may have stepped out of her committment, but using Season 1 to show some building issues, THEN in Season 2 have the infidelity occur....use Season 3 to show the impact, and Season 4 as a journey back together. I love the L Word, but I struggled to buy Season 2 and won't buy Season 3. Hell I half watched Season 3, and if I am forced to watch hetero sex between Tina and HENRY, I am going to turn it off completely.Just me two cents for what its worth....um....two cents! LOL...

Comments: Yes I'm also wondering why Jennifer never appears at events like this, it's a shame! (I'd loved it if she had been at the L2 event by the way...)

Comments: Chicki I´m so behind you on thatI read Hollomans comment on season 3, about IC having a friend that went back to men right after giving birth. That may be all good and true, but does she have to portrait every aspect of her life and that of her friends. I really do love the show, well season 1 and part season 2, but there are too many loose ends, too many episodes that leave you wondering what just happened and why. As for S3 - not my cup of tea, not gonna watch it and my hopes for S4 aren´t really that high - but well, I´m hoping and crossing my fingers

Comments: Maybe soap operas are able to tackle cancer and other socially relevant storylines because of the format. I remember a few cancer and AIDS storylines on various shows.

Comments: Of course, I'm hoping for a T and B reunion...that will be the HOTTEST moment on TV (imo) and I will no doubt cry all the way thru it. Now if IC & her backers SHOWTIME haven't got that message by now then they must be retards!!! Personally, I wonder why any of the women attend these things/interviews because IC has all the say, she may as well do it on her own, are they just there for EYE-CANDY???I had hoped that this might be a lesbian-feminist project where all the participants from acotrs to others collaborated on the series...and from a s1 interview I got that vibe but its been all downhill since then...maybe we are watching IC's personal story/viewpoints rather than a representation of the ensemble's (i.e. actors plus writers etc) perspectives.I haven't heard about the DVDs being crook...is that right? I haven't purchased any yet but was planning too...should I just save my money...someone PM with info please.
