April 4, 2006 - With the dramatic events at the end of season 3,
L Word fans have again turned to the power of petitioning in an
effort to influence the makers of the series. This isn't the first
time The L Word has inspired petitioners to use the free
online service of www.petitiononline.com. A quick search of the
site yields at least 11 petitions concerning The L Word.
Fans who are desperate to contact the producers of Showtime and
The L Word can "sign" an online petition and add
any comments they would like to pass on. They can also view the
signatures and comments of others.
But do these petitions really do any good? Probably not. They do
serve as a terrific outlet for venting emotions and frustrations
in the benign hope that someone will read the petition and respond,
and for joining forces with others who feel the same. But beyond
that, they have little use.
Here's a quick look at The L Word petitions at www.petitiononline.com
as of today:
- Bette and Tina - Together Forever Petition - 1515 signatures
- Alexandra Hedison for Season Four of The L Word Petition - 576
signatures
- Save Dana Petition - 273 signatures
- Bring Dana Back! Petition - 1600 signatures
- Australian Scheduling the Second Season of The L Word Petition
- 11 signatures
- Please Keep Lauren Lee Smith as Lara Perkins Petition - 1876
signatures
- Keep Candace on the L Word Petition - 550 signatures
- Keep Karina Lombard on The L Word Petition - 9169 signatures
- Bring Marina Back for season 3 and Beyond Petition - 793 signatures
- The L Word DVD Campaign Petition - 161 signatures
- The L word on showcase Canada Petition - 43 signatures
The petition that boasts the most signatures is the one about keeping
Karina Lombard on the show as Marina. It has a whopping 9,169 signatures
from irate fans. But did it work? No. In fact the only petition
that has had a positive outcome so far was "Please Keep Lauren
Lee Smith as Lara Perkins" with only 1,876 signatures. But
did Smith return to The L Word because of the zeal of 1,876
petitioners. Doubtful.
But, still, we can hope, can't we? If signing on online petition
helps heal the wounds of the season, if it gives us the illusion
of doing something about a situation we despise, then I guess it
couldn't hurt.
