The L Word Ladies – Up-close and Personal:
Guinevere Turner
By B&TF
WARNING: contains minor spoilers for season 4
They captured your attention on the TV screen. They made you laugh,
they made you cry and, occasionally, they made you scream at your
TV. But whatever emotions the ladies of The L Word evoked
in you, they are the ones who keep you coming back every Sunday
night when the show airs on Showtime and inspire you to travel all
over the world to attend different fan and signing events.
My latest travel adventure brought me up-close and personal with
five amazing and delightful women that one way or another evoked
some strongest and often unexpected emotions in me. It made me realize
that the cast members love The L Word as much as we do
and because of that I, personally, would like for this show to go
on forever, even if sometimes I don’t like where some storylines
are going.
This show still remains one of the kind and all of the cast members
are very special to their fans. So, without further ado let me introduce
the ladies of The L Word whom I recently met, talked to
and learn a lot from. They are: charming and hilarious Leisha Hailey,
gorgeous and adorable Laurel Holloman, shy and mischievous Mia Kirshner,
lovely and big-hearted Kate Moennig, and beautiful and talented
Guinevere Turner.

Guinevere Turner
Guinevere was beautiful, very relaxed and articulate. She
was shorter than I thought and she looks so incredible for
her 38 years. She won’t be back as a writer because
after Season 2, her contract wasn’t renewed, but she
mentioned that she wouldn’t mind to come back as Gabby.
Guin told us to write Ilene and ask her to bring Gabby back.
Guinevere has been working on several projects since The
L Word and is making “Go Fish 2”, which will
be called, “Go f*** yourself.” When she was working
on the first movie she was very young and none of them expected
the movie to be successful. The main reason for the success,
Guin thinks, is the idea that she talked there about everything
she knew, it was not to make money but to make lesbians visible.
Guin said that you have to be passionate and knowledgeable
about what you write in order to have any success with a script.

Guinevere was also absolutely hilarious. I’ve heard some
rumors about her, but she is nothing like what I’ve heard.
She was funny, interesting, informative and not a bit shy. She talked
about Gabby and said that she would like for her to come back and
she really enjoyed playing her.
Guin was also talking a lot about her involvement with TLW and
she couldn’t say anything about Season 3 because she wasn’t
working on it. She said that she watched first 10 minutes of episode
301 and right away she was thinking of how she would do it differently,
so she stopped watching and hasn’t see Season 3 yet.
Guin talked about the filming of the second season. Contrary to
some press accounts, Guin said that they knew before they began
filming that Laurel was pregnant and used that for the storyline
that we all saw.
While talking to Guin, there was an interesting fact that came
out about Alice’s chart. Apparently, the chart idea came from
Guinevere and Rose Troche. They were talking in the room one day
with a huge empty white board and they were bored and began discussing
people they knew. Guin said that she can bet that she can connect
them through people that they knew. She put their names on the board
and connected them through about six people. Guin was the center
of the lesbian universe just like Shane on the show, but only because
they began the connections through her name.
Ilene came in and looked at the board. Guin told her to put her
name there and Ilene first said that she’s not going to be
on it, but finally she did. Then more people added their names and
the chart was born. Ilene liked the idea, and they decided to use
it on the show. Guin said that they are planning to put it on the
Internet and to make the virtual connections around the world just
like Alice did in Season 2.
Guin’s favorite episode that she wrote was “Looking
Back” when the girls shared their coming out stories, and
Guin also shared her coming out story: She liked a girl in college
but was too shy to talk to her. So one day they were talking and
the girl said, “Um, listen…no, never mind.” Guin:
“What? Tell me.” Girl: “Well, I’m…no,
never mind.” Guin: (in soft sexy voice) “What is it?”
Girl: “I like you” and she leaned for a kiss, and Guin
ran away. But they ended up together and she was Guin’s first
girlfriend.
Guin’s favorite character to write for was Alice because
she can write using humor. Gabby wasn’t written by Guin, someone
else suggested that character and wrote for her and Guin was chosen
to play. She liked that Gabby was such a bad ass because it’s
more interesting and entertaining to play those kinds of characters.
Guin talked about other projects, including Shortbus,
an “almost porn” movie that she had auditioned for but
didn’t get the part. The movie preview on IMDB web site indicates
that Daniela Sea is in the movie.
Guinevere Turner was delightful, interesting, beautiful and funny.
I can only imagine what it would be like to spend some time with
her one–on-one and to hear more of her behind the scenes stories
on acting, directing, and producing.
