18th Annual GLAAD Awards in Los Angeles

By BetteAndTinaForever

Disclaimer: I’m not a professional journalist or reporter or photographer. I do this because I love The L Word (I’m actually addicted to the show) and it sort of became my hobby to go to different TLW events and tell about them to the fans who can’t participate themselves. I don’t claim to be an expert; I’m just trying to do my best to share my experiences with everyone. I’m also a TiBetter, which sometimes motivates me to talk about Bette and Tina with other cast members and not only Laurel Holloman and Jennifer Beals who portray them. And I want to extend my gratitude to l-word.com and to Jacky for making this happen.

From L-word.com: We are a fan site for The L Word and have been since before the show premiered. We are not a news agency. Sometimes, we report news. Mostly, though, we provide information to fans—by fans—about the show and actors associated with TLW. BetteAndTinaForever provides to us—and hundreds of thousands of fans—an insight to events that virtually none of us would be able to attend given geography, money, and time. We thank her immensely for sharing reports and photos with us.

We would be very happy to publish photos and stories of other fans who attend events who would be kind enough to share them with other fans. Contact us at webmaster@l-word.com. Thank you.

The GLAAD Media Awards presented to mainstream media, like TV shows, daytime soap opera, newspapers, etc., for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives. For the third consecutive year, this year GLAAD Media Awards will be aired on LOGO this Saturday, April 21 but it will be repeated frequently.

I went to the 18th Annual GLAAD Media Awards last Saturday as it was held at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. As press representative of L-word.com, I was allowed to take pictures and interview guests and celebrities during their arrivals for the ceremony. It was my second “red carpet” experience for L-word.com, and I was excited to see the cast of The L Word, though I didn’t know who would appear.

When I received the press information on the attendees and celebrities, my eyes immediately went to the cast members of The L Word…after all, I’m mainly doing this for them. Imagine my joy and happiness when my most favorite Laurel Holloman was scheduled to appear, along with Rachel Shelley and Marlee Matlin. I almost jumped happily but had to restrain myself because there were a lot of press and attendees in the room already.

I hate to admit it, but there were a few celebrities I didn’t know, but then again, I can’t possibly watch all the TV shows that have gay and lesbian characters.

Since GLAAD Media Awards take place in a few different cities, not all the categories and nominations were presented in Los Angeles. For this particular event there were the following categories announced: Outstanding Film-wide release (Little Miss Sunshine was a winner), Outstanding Drama Series for which The L Word was nominated (Brothers and Sisters won that award, unfortunately), Outstanding Comedy Series (Ugly Betty won and I saw Eric Mabius (Tin Haspel) among the cast members that came on the stage to get the award), Outstanding Individual Episode (the award went to Grey’s Anatomy), and Outstanding Spanish-language Newspaper (La Opinion).

I was placed at the end of the red carpet, unfortunately, because all the major news stations, newspapers and websites were given the priority standing. It didn’t really bother me that much because I was waiting for The L Word ladies to come through, hoping that they would stop for the pictures and some interviews. I was so preoccupied with looking for them that when Jennifer Aniston went pass me all I could think was, “Here goes Jennifer Aniston…where is Laurel?”

Comments: "Do you think that there's still hope for them getting back together?" and Laurel turned around, smiled and simply said, "Yes." >I just fell of my chair. She turned! She turned and smiled! I love her. *sigh*
