April 7, 2006, Los Angeles, CA - The L Word received
the award for Outstanding Drama Series at the 17th Annual GLAAD
awards presented last night in Los Angeles. The award was accepted
by Leisha Hailey, Mia Kirshner, and show creator Ilene Chaiken.
This is the second year that The L Word was nominated for
Outstanding Drama Series. Also nominated this year were Commander
in Chief (ABC), Queer as Folk (Showtime), Six Feet
Under (HBO), and South of Nowhere (The N). Last year's
winner in this category was Six Feet Under.
Other GLAAD awards presented in Los Angeles last night were:
- Vanguard Award: Charlize Theron (presented by Jillian Armenante)
- Stephen F. Kolzak Award: Melissa Etheridge (presented by Laura
Dern)
- Outstanding Film - Transamerica (The Weinstein Company)
- Outstanding Drama Series: The L Word (Showtime)
- Outstanding Comedy Series: Will & Grace (NBC)
- Outstanding Individual Episode: TIE: "Best Friends"
Cold Case (CBS) and "Pilot" My Name is Earl
(NBC)
- Outstanding Documentary: TransGeneration (The Sundance
Channel/Logo)
The awards ceremony will be televised on LOGO on April 15 at 9:00
p.m. (EST). It will also air on VH1 on April 16 at 11 p.m. (EST).
This is the first GLAAD award won by The L Word. In last
year's San Francisco GLAAD award ceremony, Jennifer Beals was presented
with the Golden Gate Award. GLAAD awards the Golden Gate Award to
members of the entertainment and media industries who have made
a significant difference in promoting equal rights for LGBT people.
The GLAAD Media Awards honor individuals and projects in mainstream
media for their fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of
the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, and the issues
that affect their lives. GLAAD Media Awards were presented in Los
Angeles in five of this year's 41 media categories. Additional awards
were presented in New York on March 27. Remaining awards will be
presented in Miami on May 25 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, and San
Francisco on June 10 at the San Francisco Marriott.
