Interview with Helen Shaver (Desert Hearts, The L Word)

My first question is about Desert Hearts. There was news that there might be a Desert Hearts II and you would be starring with Patricia again, resuming your role of Vivian Bell.
Of course, if the news is true, then, of course I would.

Well, it sometimes happens in soap operas, when they announce that role of so and so will be played by someone else…
No, no, no…I’m Vivian Bell and there’s no one else to play that role.

I began watching The L Word before I saw Desert Hearts. I was really surprised when I saw you in Desert Hearts and thought, “Faye Buckley…how ironic.”
I think they offered me that role as an inside joke. The fact that I was Vivian Bell and now I’m coming back as such a right-wing nut case, I have to assume that we all have our tongues in our cheeks to play that (laughing) or whatever. But anyway, yes, I think it was sort of a joke.

What role was more interesting for you to play?
Well, look at me and answer the question yourself (laughing). Of course, Vivian Bell. I did that little role on The L Word to support the series, because I think it’s very groundbreaking and a good thing to have out there. That’s why I did that but clearly, it was more fun was to be Vivian Bell and be a star of the movie than to do that kind of little role on the series (laughing), especially the one who was such a bitch.

Do you think Faye might come back?
I don’t know; I have no idea.

Would you like to come back if invited?
If it was an interesting role to do, I would do that. I certainly don’t have an attachment to that character in the same way I have an ownership of Vivian Bell, you know. It’s an entirely different thing for me.

Let’s talk a little more about the next Desert Hearts film.
Donna Deitch is going to be directing and, if it happens, she’s the one who will come up with the script. To my knowledge as of today there’s no script. But we’ve talked about it off and on over the years, so if and when it happens, for sure I’ll be there.

Do you think that your character ended up with Kay (Patricia Charbonneau’s character)? You know, the story ended with them on the train and it could go either way, so do you think they ended up together?
I think as with every love story, it’s gone through many incarnations but I believe that love is an energy that once created cannot be destroyed; it just changes its form; so in all these years their love has changed many times. Whether they are partners living in New York City, I don’t know but Patricia is there. We still make a good looking pair.

Oh, yeah, you look good together.
Yes, we still look good together (laughing). I just directed her last week in “Law and Order: SVU” and I asked her to come and do a role for me; so we’ve been in touch.

Interview with Donna Deitch (Director, Desert Hearts)

Is there a possibility of Desert Hearts II, since there have been rumors about it?
You will find out a little bit more about it tonight but the rumors are true.

Is there a script already?
I’m writing the script right now and of course the main characters will be in it.

Any spoilers you can give us about the direction that the sequel will take? What happened after twenty years?
Let me just tell you this. It takes place in New York City. That’s all I can say.

I might not be able to see the presentations tonight, so can you tell me in short what will you talk about later?
Well, I’m actually going to read the opening of the sequel.

Great. I saw the movie a few times and it was really great. There’s a new version of the movie coming out with more extras, right?
There’s a brand new DVD coming. It has all these extras that are not on the original DVD. We have a Trip Down Memory Lane where I interviewed both of the actresses twenty years later talking about the process of making the film. I also have a Behind the Scenes to look at the entire making of the film. And then I have extras from the love scene that have never been seen before. It’s called Anatomy of the Love Scene. It’s a special feature and that was the real reason to get the new DVD out.

That’s great. I love to watch movies but I also buy them for the extras and sometimes there’s nothing on it, you’ve seen the movie and then you think, “What’s next?” Extras are something that we can enjoy and that enhance the experience of the film.
Yes, it’s all new and it’s all different.

Comments: Yes, the wonderful Seahurst is so right : thank you SO very much for reminding to everybody who didn't see Desert Hearts (yet !) what unique place Helen Shaver has in the history of lesbian cinema ! (and what a charm too... I really had Cay's eyes for her ! ^_^) Oh, god, this movie was so important for me : I watched it years ago, at a time I was finally realizing how blind I was all my life about myself... Vivian Bell began such a symbol for me : similar "blindness", a love for literature, a weakness for brunettes (well, even if the love of my life is a blonde *wink & sigh*)... Yes, Seahurst, this historic love scene also was the first one I eve saw and it was deeply moving. Because it has the same essential quality I love so much in these scenes - and so the one I love so much as an incurable Tibetter : feelings, emotions. For me, even knowing what Donna Deitch said one day about her own idea of Vivian and Cay's future, I always wanted to believe in a happy ending. The same way I will never stop to hope for a Bette&Tina reunion. Good ol' romantic girl, that's me for life - too late to change ! *** B&TForever, you know how grateful I always was to you for all these events you covered and fabulous interviews you gave us. But this one is so especially precious for me : Helen Shaver ! Desert Hearts will always keep a unique place in my heart and to know, thanks to you, that there will be a sequel - wow !! You just made my day ! Many, many special thanks for this interview. I wish you a great New Year, talented author and journalist ! ^_^ - A.

Comments: I was a 22 year old who was just coming out to family and friends when this movie came out. I took a train into NY and a subway to the theater. I'll never forget walking up to street level and looking across at the theater and seeing a SEA of women outside the theater. I was in heaven, and it was an image and feeling I'll never forget. I fell in love with Desert Hearts. It will always be my favorite lesbian movie. I would LOVE to see a sequel. Anyone want to write some Desert Hearts fan fic? Think of all the possibilities of what happened to Vivian and Kay...

Comments: Thank you so much for this interview! I loved it so much that I spent last night uploading a few Helen Shaver photos/articles to Flickr -- in the hope that a few younger "L Word" viewers would stumble across one photo in particular, to find out just how sexy Faye Buckley truly is!http://www.flickr.com/photos/82444449@N00/2194776178/I can't wait until Donna Deitch makes her sequel. Desert Hearts still touches me as deeply as it did so long ago. Thanks again!

Comments: I actually just rented "Desert Hearts" for the first time from Netflix recently and loved it. But I can't believe what a dork I am, I didn't even realize that was the same actress who played "Faye Buckley"! Wow, she was so incredibly different, just shows how much range she has. She left such an impression from both characters as different as they were. Great interviews, thanks!

Comments: Wow - I just read these interviews, and everyone's comments about their own personal expreinces of Desert Hearts and what it means to them. It is evident that it means SO much to us all! For me it was my saviour in darker hours before I came out, and I would watch it over and over. Wishing that I could be myself and thinking Helen Shaver was beautiful! :) It also made me think how a film, made over twenty years ago, is so much better than alot of lesbian films out there today! Including the sex scene! It makes me bow down in admiration for Donna Deitch even more! So hats off to her, Helen Shaver and Patricia Charbonneau! :D
