For those who haven’t read the previous report on San Francisco The L Word Gala and is not familiar with the host of the event, here’s a little reminder:

Curve is the well-known lesbian magazine and in this season of The L Word the magazine whose staff made a guest appearance in the second episode. Jenny Schecter had given an interview to a freelance writer and then went all crazy at the Curve magazine’s office because she didn’t like the interview.

On Saturday, March 3, the magazine held another L Word Gala party at Los Angeles Windham Bel Age Hotel. While I was walking around the room and getting ready to take pictures, I checked the reserved tables and found out that in addition to scheduled The L Word cast member Janina Gavankar and Honey Labrador, we were also expecting several surprise celebrities, like Margaret Cho and Guinevere Turner.

I arrived earlier again and helped the volunteers to organize the gift bags that ended up containing a lot of goodies, including the latest issue of the Curve Magazine with Janina Gavankar on the cover.

The doors were opened at 8 pm as usual for all the guests, and this time I noticed that the atmosphere around was more laid-back and the guests and fans were more sophisticated…at least until Janina Gavankar arrived with her manager and her mom.

Janina was very nice and friendly, talking to the fans and taking pictures with them. By the time everyone settled down and the party started, it was already 10 pm.

This time another comedienne, Sabrina Matthews, greeted the crowd and was supposed to do a short comedic routine and then introduce Frances Stevens. However, the publisher of the Curve magazine was nowhere to be found for some time, so Sabrina ended up doing a long comedic routine. It was funny, so I didn’t mind.

The entertainment part of the evening, in my opinion, was better and more exciting this time. First, Jukie Sunshine, a burlesques dancer from San Francisco, performed an ‘almost-striptease’ dance and then Sabrina Matthews introduced Kings of Drag, a drag troupe from Sacramento. They performed several exciting musical numbers and at some point Janina joined the crowd and sang along with one of the songs.

Then Honey Labrador talked to the fans and told us again about the new L Word clothing and jewelry line, and even though the prices might not be affordable to many TLW fans, it is really wonderful to remember that some of the money go towards the Cancer Research Foundation.

Finally, it was Janina’s turn to speak and while Sabrina was announcing her, they showed a clip from episode 402 with the limousine ‘infamous circles’ scene between Papi and Alice.

The scene made Janina blush, and she didn’t believe that this is what they chose to show with her mother watching.

Janina mentioned again how different from Papi’s character she is and how excited she was to be on the show. Janina even brought her mother and some other family members with her to share her excitement.

I had a chance to talk to Mohra Gavankar, Janina’s mother, a little later. She is part Indian and part Dutch. She told me that she is really excited about her daughter being on the show, but she hadn’t watch it before Janina got the role of Papi. After Janina landed the part, Mohra watched all previous seasons to make herself familiar with the show.

After Janina’s speech she and Frances Stevens began signing autographs, which of course I couldn’t miss, so I was one of the first in line so I could get my autograph and spend the rest of the evening taking pictures. Fans were getting more excited, taking more pictures with Janina, and the whole event ended up way past midnight.

The whole evening was really relaxing for me, full of wonderful conversations with different guests and fans and to top it all,

the funniest thing happened to me on the way back to my hotel. I was picked up by an Armenian taxi driver who immediately began speaking Russian to me (I originally from Russia). After a fairly meaningless conversation about his life in LA and taxi drivers’ hardship, he said one interesting thing, though I don’t think for him it was anything positive.

He said, while we were driving on Sunset Blvd, that in a few years all Americans will be gay. I found it incredible ironic, coming from the L Word Gala Party, so I simply agreed.
