The L Word Down Under – Convention in Sydney, Australia, Jan. 22-24, 2010

By B&TF

We all knew that The L Word will come to an end, sooner or later. Of course, majority of the fans, at least those who cared enough to post on different TLW-related forums, expressed their fantasy wish that the show would go on for a very long time.

The fans were not the only ones wanting more time with their favorite characters. Pam Grier said in one interview to l-word.com that she wanted to see the show going into its seventh, eight and even into a ninth season. Why, even Jennifer Beals and Laurel Holloman joked a few times what their characters, Bette and Tina, would do when they are old and living in a nursing home.

Alas, the show had ended and some of you might still have a hard time to let go. Well, there are few ways to keep the spirit of The L Word alive in your lives, and one of them is L Word Conventions. Starfury is having L6 Convention in September, as you all know, and there are already plans set in motion for L7.

And here’s a great opportunity for many fans from Australia and New Zealand to have a first ever The L Word Down Under Convention, right in their backyard. Of course, fans from the US and Europe will have to travel far and for many hours but nothing could stand in the way of the enthusiasm of many fans who have been talking about Aussie Convention for a few months now.

The first official press release came out in March when United L Events (ULE) announced that they will hold the first L Word Convention in Sydney on January 22-24, 2010. At that time, Laurel Holloman and Rachel Shelley already signed up as the first guests.

In May, Marlee Matlin was added to the guest list. Marlee will be accompanied by her interpreter and business partner, Jack Jason, who has an amazing ability to convey Marlee’s emotions, expressions and feelings. They have been a team since the beginning on Marlee’s career, though Jack’s first assignment wasn’t interpreting for Marlee but accompanying her while she was shopping in New York. Recently Marlee released her autobiography, “I Scream Later” and she mentioned on her twitter that she would love to talk about her book and sign it at the convention.

ULE is currently in negotiations with three other actors from the principal cast of the series and their appearance will be announced soon on the convention website. In addition, a lesbian comedian Poppy Champlin will host the Convention.

The fans will have an opportunity participate in Q&A sessions, have a chance to get their picture taken with the cast members and also get their autographs, as well as attend parties and meet other fans of the show.

The tickets for the convention went on sale on June 19 and they are still available on the Convention website www.thelworddownunder.com. The websites also provides very useful links on how to travel to and from Sydney, about the Convention venue, Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre and offers a forum where you can ask questions and share your excitement.

Since the announcement of the Aussie Convention, we have started a thread on this site and there you can find information on all the updates, announcements, future guests, etc. Keep an eye on it as we will continue to update that thread in the upcoming months.

As usual, we will have a reporter at the Convention to get you photos, interviews and reports from Down Under.
