- The next part was really entertaining. The ladies were asked
if they would like to work together on another project. Jennifer
said in funny western accent that she would like to do a cowboy
movie, like Brokeback Mountain only with girls, and Rachel gave
her the pink hat to wear. Laurel said that she’ll join her
partner, meaning Jennifer, and that she would like to do a cowgirl
movie and that she already have an accent for that. Then Laurel
said, “I know she can ride a horse and I can ride a horse
but I don’t know what you would do,” looking at Rachel
and referring to her being British and calling her “a British
lady on a horse.” Rachel replied that she would ride a donkey
on a beach and she made a few riding movements and it made everyone
laugh really hard, including Jennifer and Laurel.
- Q&A became a little more serious when Jennifer was talking
about going to Japan to promote the L Word because a fan from Korea
asked if they will ever come to her country and then they began
joking again with each other and Jennifer passed the hat on to Laurel.
Laurel said that she feels like a cowgirl already and lifted her
legs up in the air and clicked her heels. Everyone laughed again
and Laurel said that she wanted to wear her chaps today but Rachel
talked her out of it.
- A fan talked about being married for 15 years and that we all
have dreamed about Bette and Tina wedding and then asked if it will
happen in season 6. Jennifer and Laurel looked at each other and
then Jennifer made a gesture of locking her lips and throwing away
the key. Laurel lowered the hat over her eyes and then later said
that maybe it will happen in the L Word: the Movie. Jennifer added
that we should post about it on OurChart because Ilene reads it.
(Well, we all know what happened to OC but in her latest interview
to Go Magazine, Ilene did mention again that she wants to do the
movie).
- Someone asked Jennifer about her triathlon training, what motivates
her to do that and what suggestions she has for those who want to
do it. Jennifer replied that when she began doing it, for her it
was a matter of training or perishing. Once she got into it, it
became sort of an addiction and there’s always danger of over-doing
it. There are a lot of programs to follow and if you keep to your
schedule, it gets easier. Then she mentioned that even this morning
she didn’t spent time on her hair so she could go for a swim
at her hotel. The great motivation for her recent triathlon was
that she set it up as a way to raise money for charities and that
reason made her get up every morning at some ungodly hour instead
of staying in a nice and warm bed, because it wasn’t about
her. She was doing it for someone close to her.
- The next fan said that she loves Jennifer and Rachel but she
absolutely adores Laurel. It made Laurel blush and cover her face
with the pink hat she was still wearing. Then Laurel took the hat
off and Rachel fanned Laurel’s face as if she needed it. The
fan was from Bulgaria, I think, and it was really hard to understand
what she was saying and I think it was hard for the cast members
as well. The fan was going on and on how much she loved Laurel in
season 5 and that she watches it all the time and her girlfriend
gets upset because she watches Tina instead of having sex with her.
Then the same fan continued talking about her girlfriend who is
bi and that the storyline of Tina going back to men helped her to
understand the situation better and appreciate that her girlfriend
is with her, because it’s her first lesbian relationship (just
like Bette was Tina’s). Laurel thanked her and replied that
it was the same for Tina who was only with men before Bette. Then
Bette ‘flipped’ her and she realized that none of her
relationships with men had the same dynamics as the one she had
with Bette. Laurel also added that even though it was hard for her
to do ‘going back to men’ storyline, that story was
really important to be told and she glad that it helped.
The same fan kept talking for a very, very, very long time and
by the time she got to an actual question, everyone was ‘booing’
her and yelling for her to sit down and stop talking. She finally
asked if Bette figured out her ‘whys’ and especially
why she cheated with the carpenter. Jennifer just sat there, thinking
about the answer and then Rachel said, “Because she was hot.”
Everyone laughed and Laurel made a gesture with her hand, as if
she was shooting at Jennifer. Everyone kept laughing, including
the cast members, and after saying something else, the fan finally
finished.
- Someone asked if Bette ever saw the original Jodi’s sculpture
before she changed it to the video installment. This question brought
some confusion because apparently none of them understood what the
fan was asking, so Jennifer and Rachel began talking about I, trying
to answer the question. It was so funny because they were contradicting
each other and it was still apparent they didn’t understand
the question, so finally Laurel said, “That’s why a
relationship between these two would never work.” Oh, and
the question was never really answered.
- Someone asked about the scene from 512 when Tina was comforting
Bette after the Hammer Museum incident. The fan said that Tina’s
body was rigid and though she was caressing Bette’s hair with
her right hand, her left hand was in a fist and the body language
suggested that she was angry or something. Laurel was like, “Wow,
you guys really notice everything and know it much better than we
do.” Then she said that it didn’t really mean anything.
Sometimes their DP tells them that some poses look beautiful and
they would try to hold it as long as possible, even if it’s
a little awkward. It probably was the case in this scene, even though
she didn’t remember for sure. Tina wasn’t angry, it
was all about comforting Bette and caring about Bette’s pain.
She also added that Tina felt guilty about what they did to Jodi
but she also wanted Bette back.
- I don’t remember why but at this point Laurel put the pink
hat back on Rachel’s head and then another fan asked them
to imagine a parallel universe where they were all gay, who would
they marry? Laurel said, “Tina Fay.” Jennifer replied
that she would marry Kelly Lynch and make her dress as Ivan. Rachel
said that she is totally crushing on Beyonce right now and she doesn’t
know why.
- A fan asked Laurel that from the previous convention we know
that she kissed Angelina Jolie and she wanted to know who did she
liked to kiss better, Angelina or Jennifer Beals. Laurel asked in
this really low voice, “What do you think?” It was funny
to watch Jennifer because she was just sitting there and smiling
like the question didn’t involve her. The fan replied, “I
know what I think but I want to know what you think.” Laurel
paused as if she was thinking and then said, “Jennifer Beals,
of course. How is that even a question?” Of course the audience
heartily agreed with Laurel because the cheering, whistles and applause
were really loud.
- The next part began really funny. A fan said that she has question
for Jennifer and she hoped that Laurel and Rachel didn’t mind
that. They put their heads together and pretended to be asleep.
Everyone laughed and then Rachel and Laurel began playing patty-cake
with their hands and Jennifer was just laughing together with everyone
in the audience. The fan finally asked if Jennifer was feeling more
comfortable now because she seemed a little nervous on the first
day. Jennifer pointed at Rachel and Laurel and said that she is
more comfortable because of these two and that they should have
their own cable show. The same fan began talking for a long time
and honestly, I couldn’t understand her well. I don’t
think she even asked a question, she was just talking. It was something
about politics and legislation as if she was making some kind of
political statement.
And again everyone began getting impatient so the fan finally said,
“Okay, the question. How did being on The L Word change you?”
Jennifer was the first to reply and she said that she was never
political before the show and she wasn’t aware of many things
that were going on. She wasn’t aware that there is a whole
group of wonderful people that had to be apologetic for who they
are. She became more political so she could help with erasing hate
in legislation and within the culture. She then said that all her
life she identified herself as “the other” and at that
moment Jennifer became very emotional and joked that she should’ve
brought tissues with her. Laurel handed her a tablecloth from the
table near her and Jennifer dabbed her eyes. Then a fan from the
audience walked to the stage and gave Jennifer the pack of tissues.
Jennifer took it and when she sat back down, she continued, saying
that until recently her own existence as a bi-racial woman was illegal.
Then she began crying again and she looked at Rachel, taking the
pink hat and putting it on her head.
I guess because the hat was so silly, it helped Jennifer to calm
down and she continued by saying that being on The L Word helped
her to identify with the community and made her feel an instant
connection with the LGBT community that is also often identified
as “others”. She was talking about gay marriage and
then suddenly pointed at the hat and said, “I really like
the feathers, they are helping me to calm down.” She also
said that she even told her husband that being here was the cheapest
therapy and that it was so wonderful to meet so many fans and hear
their personal stories that they shared at the convention and during
her time filming The L Word. She was sort of getting emotional again
and she touched the feathers on the hat and said, “I feel
so gay.” She also called herself ‘an honorary lesbian’.
It helped, everyone laughed and cheered and Jennifer finished her
answer, saying that, of course, being on the show taught her a lot
of other things, like dental dams. She didn’t know what it
was and she said that she kept thinking, ‘How do they do that?’
She then took the pink hat off because she was now calm.
Rachel answered that she had that question yesterday and that basically
the show changed her a lot, as well, and she also became more political
and became aware of many issues that she hadn’t thought about
before. She also talked about meeting all those amazing women, who
are charming and funny and educated and that she had never worked
with the all-female cast before and that it was great.
Laurel said that before the show she moved a lot and lived in many
different places, like New York, Chicago, filming a low budget movie
in Timbuktu. She hadn’t been in a relationship for a long
time before meeting her husband, Paul. As they began filming the
Pilot, her life had changed and Tina’s life really paralleled
hers in many ways. She wanted to start a family and she was able
to buy her very first house with her first paycheck, so that she
finally could put down her roots somewhere. She said that she had
met so many wonderful people from the community and at the conventions.
This time Laurel stopped, unable to finish her sentence because
of the emotions, so Jennifer handed the pink hat to her. Laurel
put it on and amazingly, she was able to continue. She said that
the show had given her emotional security and confidence. She then
joked that the pink hat made her want to giggle. (I’m seriously
thinking about getting something like that for myself because I
have a tendency to get really emotional, as well, and always at
the most inappropriate times, so maybe a pink cowgirl hat will help).
Laurel continued her answer by saying that while filming The L
Word, the cast became her family and it didn’t hit her until
yesterday when Jennifer was thanking her on stage, that it was really
a goodbye. Jennifer came to her trailer to say goodbye on the set
and Laurel was like, “What are you talking about? I’m
going to see you soon”. She added that doesn’t deal
well with goodbyes and endings and it was like that since her parents
were divorced and she has the tendency to shut down her emotions
and act like it is nothing. The L Word sort of changed that and
it also changed her life in so many other ways.
Jennifer then said that this community can do something right now
to help others and ourselves and this is when the auction began.
Auction
Janina Gavankar came onto the stage and she ended up wearing the
pink hat as well for a few minutes. Jennifer went to get the stuff
for the auction and Janina said that she will be our auctioneer
and asked Rachel to be her assistant. Rachel was really funny. She
would pick up each item and begin walking around with them raised
high in her hands, like the girls do during boxing matches. And
Janina was so good, like she was a professional auctioneer, speaking
really fast and calling up the numbers, though sometimes she would
make them a little higher than the original. It was all very entertaining.
When the cast started the auction, they first showed the picture
of Kate on set, the one I promised Jennifer I will bid on. So I
began bidding and the price was going up. Janina was joking that
it was a picture of Kate in a tank top without a bra because Kate
never wears them since she doesn’t need one. I kept bidding
because I really wanted that photo and finally Jennifer took the
mic right after I raised my hand again and she repeated the story
that she told me that morning during the group photo shoot. The
one where I go to many events and Kate thinks I don’t like
her because all I talk about is Bette and Tina. Everyone laughed
and I’m sure I was bright red so I had to cover my face. I
guess I get embarrassed really easy but I continued my bidding,
because I wanted to show that I do like other characters. At the
end two people kept bidding against each other and Jennifer said,
“Well, I have two pictures of Kate on set so how about you
both get it?” I really wanted that picture so I tried to offer
more but Jennifer said that she had another picture of Kate that
is really sassy and that was taken before a Vanity Fair photo shoot.
The both high bidders agreed to pay the same amount for the first
photo and the cast proceeded with the second picture of Kate.
