L5 Convention in Blackpool (Nov. 14-16, 2008) – Tribute to The L Word and TiBette

By BetteAndTinaForever

INDEX of all photos and reports from L5

Day 2 – Saturday

Lacking sleep and almost sick from the traditional English breakfast that they served every morning at the Norbreck Castle Hotel, I got ready for my first photo shoot on this beautiful and surprisingly rainless Saturday morning.

Photo shoots

That morning I had Janina and TiBette photo shoots. Janina was very friendly with everyone, she hugged me and asked how I was doing and the picture we took was one of nicest ones. I was amazed again how much energy she had, even early in the morning after staying with fans almost until midnight and probably having a jet lag. Simply amazing!

The TiBette photo shoot was next and I can understand why so many fans felt disappointed. The chairs for Jennifer and Laurel seemed to be placed miles apart and my hopes of TiBette sandwich quickly disappeared as soon as I saw those chairs. But I can totally understand the reason behind it. I was told before that the organizers were planning to sell 700 tickets just for TiBette photo shoot and it was only happening on Saturday. Imagine Jennifer and Laurel standing there for a couple of hours and having their picture taken with 700 fans? They’d be exhausted and would still have whole day ahead of them.

And I think it also eased their worries about being groped by 700 fans, most of whom were probably TiBetters. It took one fan to ruin it for the rest of us at L2 when she touched Laurel inappropriately, so I totally don’t blame the arrangements for that shoot.

So I went there, we said Hello to each other, it took me a few seconds to adjust my pose and it was over too quick but now I’m a happy owner of a TiBette photo. I didn’t get it signed because we could only have five autographs and I already had too many photos to get signatures on, so I will wait to sign this one later.

The photo shoots are always over pretty quick because there’re so many people in line and that’s why the staff always asks us to step in and step out, without initiating a conversation, unless the cast talks to you. As soon as you done, you’re out of the room and on your way to your next destination. Mine was the main hall where the Q&A sessions were about to begin.

Q&A sessions

Since there are already several reports from the convention floating around the Internet, I will concentrate on more interesting questions that were answered during the Q&A sessions and the ones that I remember.

Janina Gavankar

On Saturday, Janina was the first one and she was highly entertaining and full of energy, as usual. So here are some of the highlights of Janina’s Q&A.

- Janina was playing a new intern in Grey’s Anatomy for two episodes (though we’ve learned since then that she wasn’t returning). The show was very different from The L Word.

- When asked who the best kisser on The L Word was, Janina didn’t want to answer at first but then she began talking about kissing Leisha and that it was really great so when Leisha asked if she could use her tongue, Janina’s answer was Yes.

- A lot of improvisations is going on during the filming and Mia Kirshner is a genius improvisator. With her you never know what could happen but Janina herself is not that good at it. Leisha is also very good with improvisations. Pam Grier made up a few lines, including the one after the salsa dance when Kit wakes up in the morning and sais, “I didn’t even make the Chart?” It was all Pam.

- Circles question was always among the first ones being asked and Janina is such a trooper because she always answers it. She said that it’s different for everyone, circles are your own personal thing and she had to do many hours of research. Her last advice was: “Do it with a friend and learn. If you can’t find circles, find someone else who can find them for you. If the circles won’t work, find what works better for you.” She was hilarious.

- Janina was really excited to do scenes with Pam Grier, though for the girl who always gets a girl, Papi didn’t get the one she wanted.

- Papi is an athlete but Janina is not, she’s a musician in real life.

- If she was a fruit, Janina would be mango.

- Janina said that Papi is very protective of her friends, as she described the basketball scene when Papi and how her team accepted Tina to play with them. She said that she would love to see that side of Papi to be explored more.

- She was sad when her character didn’t come back for season 5 but she understood, because they introduced so many new characters and there were too many stories and only one hour to tell them in each episode.

- Janina mentioned Proposition 8 and how disgusted she was that in our age and time it can still happen and in California of all places. She said, “Don’t worry, fight it.”

Later she invited her mom to participate and told us that we can ask any question about her. At that moment I left to find out if I will be able to get any interviews because usually the best time for them is in between the Q&A sessions. I didn’t hear all the questions or answers but I know it was really entertaining because I heard a lot of laughter going on.

Comments: Thank you, B&TF, it's so great read about this Event of the year again and again!Intresting Q&A witn Rachel also.Waiting for final part and littletalk with Jennifer:)The most sad part is that:"and Laurel said, "Yes, it was like a goodbye to us, as well. We're only going to see each other at some events." I replied, "But you and Jennifer are friends, you'll see each other in LA." Laurel smiled and said, "Well, we live in different areas." So hope to see them on some events soon

Comments: As always thank you so much for the insider view...the Bette & Tina stuff almost had my tearing up too. & of course the stuff about Dana. It just seems so wrong to have the show end w.out her. But aside from that I was esp. struck by the comment Rachel Shelley made about wanting to do a character like "Brenda" on SFU...b/c she is one of my all time fav characters. Anywho, great report...thank you so much B&TF!!!
