Comments: muggs, the pattern is a triscoll, the central medallion being 4 of them conjoined in a circular pattern and employing a typically gaelic use of continuous line. The 3 lobes suggest the 3-fold nature of existence as represented in gaelic tradition as sky, sea, and earth (and who knows what else) and was adapted by Christianity as a symbol of the Trinity.
