Ashes to Dust; Lovers to Friends

– Why do all good things come to an end?

Written by Lone Rasmussen

I promised myself that I would not be sucked in again but I know now that I am not going to be able to keep that promise. Once again, I have to come to terms with the fact that the L Word has managed to get me hooked and causing me to suffer from mild yet still critical panic attacks as each episode of season four has rolled over the screen. After my stalker-ish and fanatic behaviour at the end of season two, I promised myself – and my girlfriend – that I would try to cool things down a bit. Luckily, season three was a disappointment culminating with Dana’s death and I was called back(!) from the dog house by my girlfriend. Apparantly I am a bit annoying when I have one of my ‘projects’ as I like to call it (my girlfriend calls it an addiction but what does she know?!).

So, here we are again and I am back to square one! I am at pretty much the same mental state now as I was when I realized that season two was endning and Bette and Tina was almost getting back together: Completely ecstatic! Throughout all seasons of the L Word I have asked myself how it is possible for two actors to have such an amazing on-screen chemistry? Before seeing the last episode of season four I had actually come to terms with Bette and Jodi, realizing that it would be bit of a stretch to have Bette and Tina back together – again. During season three I rationalized and contemplated that it would be for the best and more realistic if they did in fact argue over petty little things (not Tina’s return to hetero-life) and eventually split up. So, now, what would be the purpose of them getting back together and what have changed since then?

I cannot give you a scientific explanation but Jennifer Beals and Laurel Holloman – with massive support from their fans – seem to have created a pedestal where other couples, gay or straight, cannot reach them. Even though Bette and Tina started season four with a custody battle, the season ended with the two of them talking and hanging out like in the good old days. There is one particular scene in which I realized the magic of the two; episode 412 when Bette and Tina are at (Bette’s) home and Phyllis and Joyce stop by: Seeing Bette and Tina standing in the doorway together simply under minded every other scene in that episode for me! How is it possible to have to people simply standing next to each other and seem so right for each other? That is one reason that fans have craved reconciliation between them and that they have become the Über-couple in gay television. I realize that you can downplay the chemistry and say ‘It’s only actors playing a part’ but let’s give them an award already! Nothing has necessarily changed between Bette and Tina and perhaps they still need to grow up a bit but I have plenty of time when I know that is the end result!

What actually started this whole brain storming was me sitting in my car the other day and listening to the radio and Nelly Furtado’s All Good Things. I came to realize that this song’s chorus lines in particular embodies the one thing I have left to say about Bette and Tina: Ashes to dust; Lovers to friends – Why Do All Good Things Come to an End?

I for one can’t until season five kicks off in January 2008!

Comments: Don't feel bad for your "obsessive" behavior, Season 4 just ended like 5 min ago and I have already started watching my Season 1 Dvd'd again(and bemoaning the fact of how much better it was then). I was having L w/drawl already and it's been like a week. So sad. You know I was really surprised w/ this season's ending to maybe set it up for Bette and Tina to get back together. I saw this video blog thing that Ilene did on Our Chart awhile back basically just saying how it wouldn't be right for Bette and Tina to get back together now and how destructive their relationship is. But here's hoping she changed her mind. 2008...so...far....away. Sigh.

Comments: How amazing is it that lovers can become friends. I amgoing through that presently. I am not happy about it but time has allowed us to repair our freindship. I missed the friendship aspect and now I talk with my ex-girlfriend about her perspective lovers as Tina is doing with Bette.Real Life-Real True-Real Fun-Real Exciting! I too cannot wait for the next season. Why does it have to be so far in the future?
