  WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?

Written by Moho

I have watched every episode of The L Word. Many of them multiple times, as such I have formed opinions about each of the characters on the show. In many ways, I feel I know who these characters are supposed to be. I also realize that much like real people these characters cannot be and should not be one dimensional.

As Season 3 chugs along, I find myself asking, 'Who are these characters?' The character I am most puzzled by this year is Helena. What the hell has happened to her? It is troubling.

This season, without any warning, Helena has morphed from spoiled brat woman to Mary Poppins. What am I missing here? Although, we saw flashes of sweetness and tenderness from Helena in Season 2, more often than not we saw her acting bitchy, mean (at times), manipulative, but always self confident and self assured. She even had a stalking episode when Tina returned to Bette. There were very few likeable traits about the Helena character.

Now in Season 3 we are supposed to believe that in the last six months she has become a sensitive, caring, supportive, mature and forgiving individual. All of a sudden she has become a regular member of the Planet dish sessions, she's Alice's best friend, she's comfortable and relaxed in Bette's presence, insecure and hesitant about approaching Dylan for a date. Where was the transition? When did all of this happen? How did it happen?

My biggest irritation with the show has to be the less is more philosophy. Although, I do not want to be spoon fed every detail of each character, I would like for the creative team to bridge the gap. They leave so many things incomplete, unsaid, hanging that it has become annoying. For instance, why has there been no mention of Helena's children 5 episodes into the new season? Does she not see them occasionally? Do they still exist? Did Winnie take them to a foreign land, never to be heard from again? Tell me something.

What about Mark? Where did he go? When did he move out? Was Shane upset (as Ilene positioned them as friends after the hidden camera debacle)?

More currently, what's going on with the adoption process? Seems to me that this would be mentioned in some way or another until it is complete. Did Bette and Tina get another chance after the David outburst? Is the social worker okay with the Manny solution?

There are so many questions and so few answers (even hints at the answers) from the creative team. I will continue to support the show, because I believe in its value. I also realize that these are Ilene's stories to tell as she sees fit, but DAMN.

Comments: totally agree.. i love this show and am constantly yelling at the screen NOOOO not her or slap that bitch... but i would love to know more about the inner workings of the characters and not just what there nipples look like. I am one of those Mark fans. It was nessacarry to get rid of tim, but inspite of it all, i liked mark and wanted to see him return. Its nice to have a man on the show (and no moira doesnt count) that isnt trying to get into one of my girls pants! I loved marks transition of his aspects on lesbianism to where it was as he left..but if all we get is a twitty one and a pseudo one the ohh well...and im down with the helena thing.. shes was crazy in s2 and now everyones like all kewl with her and oohh lets just be friends...drama, lesbian drama, we so crazy

Comments: totally in agreement about Helena. What the heck happened? I believe that they should have written something to the effect that one of her children was ill and Alice was there to help her through it. At least this would give us the viewers, something to chew on with her 180 degree change around. I also miss Mark and wish that there was some room for his character. The Jenny and Moira thing? At least Jenny isn't still a freak, or a much as she was in S 2. Tina better get her act together or I will continue to call her names through the tv screen.

Comments: You are so right! Especially about the writers leaving these huge information gaps about characters we have grown to care about. My friends and I have been complaining about this since season 2. Thanks for speaking my mind.

Comments: yes i totally agree esp. about the helena thing. i was totally confused by her suddenly being alice's best friend. i have no problem w/ them deciding to make helena a more likeable character or even "one of the gang"...but agree that a little explanation for how it happened would be helpful!!! i think it could have been done as somewhat of an evolution not just they all woke up one morning and she had undergone a personality transplant. also along that same line..i was wondering why all the build up w/ the psychic making it seem as though her and alice would hook up and then nothing. i thought that could actually be an interesting development!!! i hadn't even thought about the kids but that is also a good point! where are they??? very confusing.

Comments: I'm wondering if the reason we haven't heard anything about the adoption is that it will be used for more drama later. For instance, if Tina and Bette do break up will Tina withdraw the adoption petition and leave Bette out of Angelica's life? Just a thought.

Comments: i am in total agreement with you about the Helena issue and the other gaps in story lines this season. the lack of info and the dreary episodes thus far have depressed me, and furthermore, failed to entertain me. granted, the writers and Chaiken have a lot of info to put out about the community and women in general, and not a lot of time to do it in, but nonetheless, mucking with previously wonderful character dynamics just to get a rise out of crtitics, is a total betrayal of the people who matter most: the fans. This season feels like a soap opera laced with a satire, and i for one would like to know when this show started being about informing heteros and making them squirm. please, let's try to get some stability and general happiness written in next season. not all lesbians are raving, melodramatic, neurotic narcissists who sabotage their own happiness with self-loathing and self-involvement. let's see some humor and happily-ever-afters! cuz i hate being up this late typing tirades about something that is totally out of my hands.

Comments: I think all of the goodness that was in Tina... morphed into helena... and all the bitchiness went into tina... this year i think jenny is writing the show... and she is still eating those mushrooms...WTF... and as far as filling in the blanks... forgetaboutit... its never going to happen... IC thinks we are all loving her story... well she is wrong... now don't get me wrong... but i wish the show wasn't picked up for season 4... now she thinks this shit is good drama...
