  THE TWILDYKE ZONE

Editorial by Gennie88

I've been an enthusiastic fan of the L-word since it premiered in 2004 and have merrily ignored the story inconsistencies, odd episode openers, bad music and the addition of unnecessary peripheral characters (Mark from s2 much?). I have kept with the show and continued applauding it for all of its positives. Great core cast, offbeat humor, it's tackling of controversial and important LGBT issues, and interesting story lines. However my initial and continued reaction to episodes 1 and 2 of season 3 was, "This has just become yet another trashy, superficial, soap...what happened to the writing?"

After last years lackluster season finale I expected the show to tie up some loose ends and resolve some story arcs. Instead, all we get are plot twists that are just "shock value, shock value, drama vehicle". For example, Alice and Dana's relationship was a story line that progressed from the end of season one and continued throughout all of season 2 and now suddenly without any rationale or explanation it's just over. Are we honestly expected to believe that Dana, who was head over heels in love with Alice and her best friend to boot, would just suddenly leave a generally happy relationship to go be with her ex, and the only reasoning for this was move was "closure"? If you couldn't deliver detail at least give us a general idea of what happened L-Word writers.

And trying to temper out Alice's pathetic creepy stalker behavior with humor is just not working for me. Yes, granted Alice has always been a character that was insecure and generally clingy in relationships, but a car chase, Dana shrine, and spying are just too much. What happened to the crazy, fun and charmingly awkward Alice that we've all come to know and love?

Another confusing and random change was Helena's character. Why would she suddenly be such close friends with Alice? Where and when in season 2 did the two have any real interaction? And why has her character suddenly taken a 180 and completely morphed into a nicer, gentler Helena? Is she really the one on meds and not Alice?

While it's refreshing to finally see a real butch on the show, her character still just seems dull to me and I feel like she was only chosen because she fit the bill physically. Her integration into the show so far seems pretty odd to me and bit a awkward and I'm going to see if the show handles her introduction to the rest of the cast any better.

My final impressions of season 3 were that while the characters may have retained some of the personalities that made them near and dear to their fans, it just seems like to me that a lot of the show's initial atmosphere and character has been lost and instead a lot of zany story twists are being substituted to titillate the audience. It just seems like it's a totally different show that is just using badly impersonated characters.

Comments: I agree. what is happening to this show. I don't blame cast members if they choose to leave the show. Hell, I would. Stop the insanity. I am starting to feel embaressed for the writer's. Don't they realize how bad it has become. Are'nt they embaressed to have the credits roll at the end of the show revealing who wrote this crap.

Comments: I would have to agree with the whole "Dana/Alice" thing. At the end of last season they were head over heels - now Dana can't be in the same room with Alice??? What's going on? It just doesn't work for me....maybe if they had a really big fight or Lara discussion in the first episode of season 3 it would have seemed to be a more fluid transition...?

Comments: Well if they're going to continue to let the music suck and throw out lame plotlines, the LEAST they could do is fill in the gaps between dumb story lines with more sex. The hottest thing in this week's episode was the nuns at the beginning and that's just freakin weird.

Comments: In our house it's called "The Lame Word". The writing is the pits, they go for the shock, twisted side.....something we REALLY want to put out to everyone during these dangerous times. Is this really the profile you want out there on your lifestyle????? How many Lesbians are represented on that show look, act and have relationships like your friends at home??????? My answer is NONE!!!! Can they even write one episode about a healthy relationship???????

Comments: this is such a poor excuse for a lesbian show..My girl and I have watched this show and at the end of the episode we sit and bitch and complain and threaten to cancel showtime...if i had direct contact with the producer i would say CAN THE WRITERS!!!!....in case the writer does read these comments you could have or should have turned the Dana Storyline into a Survivor instead of killing her....she could have gone on to promote Breast Cancer Awareness through her fame as a tennis star.....ya know i think its sad that Queer As Folk.. focused on Surviving, overcomming, and good times... and here we have this show for women...and its depressing, screwed up and majorly inconsistant there are Lesbians out there who have heathly relationships and (have their shit together) afterall we have tina...kit and now jenny 3 major Characters who have all turned to men...(come on!) and Now killed Dana...the ONLY CHARACTER WHO BROUGHT LIFE TO THIS DAMN SHOW! Bett.has lost her mind..and in a convent to boot whats next is she going to shave her head too??!!? Shane the player is NEVER getting any anymore......and Alice is now alone again...even the rich Helena has gotten screwed under by trying to love someone.....i think the writers of this show are bitter, lonely and sexually confused about what they want.....maybe they ought to go out and peep into a real lesbian's household..to get a damn clue
