#607: "Last Couple Standing"
And now, the penultimate episode of the series we all know and love...or
at
least still like, more or less.
Previously on The L Word, we had highlights and angst and whatever else
it
is we're supposed to experience.
Showtime Presents the next to last L of them all. It's the 2009 Los
Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center Danceoff. Do they really do this, or
this one
of those Subaru Pink Ride deals?
Alice does some pre-competition taunt stuff with Bette. It's all cute
trash talking and since this is titled Last Couple Standing, I guess the
contest obvious. Anyway, Alice departs and Jenny arrives. We get our
confrontation of sorts with Jenny going after Bette over a tryst between
Bette and Kelly that never happened, but Jenny thinks did due to
perception. Argument and verbal self defense ensues. Tina arrives and
I'm
waiting for Bette to utter something about Jenny being dead before the
opening credits, but it never happens.
So let's just say Bette kills Jenny next episode. And we didn't even
need
McMillan and Wife.
Opening credits for the next to last time, so far as we know. I think
it'd
be cool if for the last episode, they just threw all the characters into
the montage, Dana and Carmen included.
Tina's been offered a Head Of Production job and Bette's excited. The
job
however is in New York City, which means Tina'll have to move. So Tina's
not gonna take it. Alice is there with them. Alice is unsure about Marcy
showing up and brings up some movie I've never watched and then the
possibility of an affair. That sets Bette off, which Alice defends by
saying that she didn't necessarily mean Bette.
Time to begin the proceedings and Sunset is hosting. Helena's drinking
and
Tina checks on her. Well, let's consider how Helena wound up there in
the
first place and there's something artistic about this moment. They mull
over Dylan being gone for a moment. Tina assures Helena that Dylan's in
love with her.
On stage, Jamie's introduced. She does the speech thing and people
applaud. Jamie introduces the catalyst to this whole thing happening,
Alice. She brings up reading the letter that cost her her TV gig. Marie
was the letter writer and she's introduced. Guess that means she didn't
jump. Jamie and Alice are encouraged to pledge. Jenny has that chic 1960s
terrorist look going and as she's about to approach the Happy Couple,
Bette
hightails it to the stage with Tina. They pledge fifteen hundred bucks.
Meanwhile, the notion of getting on stage where there's a mic is firmly
implanted in Jenny's mind. Danger! Kit's brought on stage and she gets
to
be Sunset's dance partner.
Jenny tries some sort of apology to Helena and Helena blows her off.
Alice, Tasha and Jamie will be dancing as a trio. No teasing polyamory
if
it isn't gonna lead to polyamory, this close to the end. The idea comes
up
that Helena can dance with Jamie and while Alice goes to get Helena her
dance registration, Tasha and Jamie get to do a little more bonding or
whatever.
Sunset and Kit show us dance moves. Y'know, they could have edited this
ep
down to like 20 minutes. It's like a celebration of filler.
Criminy, I sound bitter. Everyone dances. Shane's there with Jenny, of
course. Hey look, Jodi's there! I guess she's getting down to the rhythm
of the vibrations she feels. However, she'd score cool points if she
started instinctively singing along. Bette goes to talk to Tina about
Jenny's false accusation and Alice interrupts with what appears to finally
be some insecurity over Tasha and Jamie. This leads to Bette dropping
it
before even talking about it. This also shows why Jennifer Beals had a
stunt dancer for Flashdance.
Breaktime! In the bathroom/changeroom and Bette says hello to Jodi. They
have a conversation about Jenny's accusation. Well, it appears Jenny
may've had a hand in Jodi being there. And I thought Bette was an evil
genius. Still no death threat from Bette, making her more of a probable
killer for next episode.
Back to more dancing and it's like they should be playing the Fantastic
Shakers instead of what's playing here. Shane doesn't want Bette and Tina
to leave. Meanwhile, Alice asks Helena about Jamie and Tasha possibly
having something going on the side. Jamie gets Tasha to volunteer for
the
Center. Speaking of which, whatever happened to that Oscar guy or whoever
from Season 1?
More dancing. By the way, you may have noticed that there's no Max this
week. Then again, maybe you didn't.
Niki shows up with her entourage and we get some flirtatious stuff between
her and Shane.
And now, Sunset as he goes fullblown Sylvester on us. Well, it's almost
fullblown. No fan prop.
And now the stage dance competition.
Back to costume changing and Alice looks exactly like Salt of Salt-N-Pepa
circa 1987. She and Shane and they argue over Jenny some more.
Next up, Jenny and Shane. They...perform something. This is the way they
live, you know. And LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE!!!
The male judge awards them a 10.
More playful trash talking between Alice and Bette. Tasha looks like
Pepa.
Guess that makes Jamie Spinderella. I...HEART...Spinderella.
Alice suddenly gets cold feet about the competition and it takes Tasha
and
Jamie to talk her back into doing it. Actually Tasha kinda resembles a
messed up Halle Berry.
Time for the trio to perform and of course, it's, "Push It."
That part
where they say, "Push it real good?" When I was a kid, I thought
they were
saying something else...like about their love for cats.
The male judge awards them a 10. Well, he's consistent. Or in bad a need
of getting laid.
Shane gets it on with Niki in the bathroom. Well, it's not like they
have
much longer to keep the running joke of bathroom intimacy going.
Bette and Tina dance to a Soul II Soul song while Shane and Niki get
it on.
Jenny watches the Happy Couple. Helena is greeted by Dylan! Yay! Guess
they're kissing and making up...literally.
The male judge awards Bette and Tina a 10.
Bette and Tina outdid the Alice Trio, but Alice seems to have other matters
on her mind.
Jodi and her partner are the last contestants. Jodi's apparently really
good, even if it's in that Dancing With The Stars kinda way. This would
seem like the appropriate time for the male judge to award something other
than a 10, just to be pissy. Tina asks Bette if she has any regrets after
seeing Jodi dance. Bette has none. Hooray!
Jodi got three 10's.
Alice is all mopey. Bette and Tina definetly notice and offer a little
solace.
Niki hangs with her entourage and is obviously set up by Jenny here to
go
on stage and offer herself as a date for charity.
Must...resist...fastforward...
Outside, Helena and Dylan are kissing and all happy. It's like the saving
grace of the episode. They're gonna start anew. Might as well since
there's one episode left after this and thus less time to screw things
up.
Niki foolishly goes with Jenny's idea. Jenny quells the bidding with
one
that's outrageous and untouchable, just so she can go on stage and publicly
berate Niki for bumping uglies with Shane. Jenny is spiteful like that.
Niki dashes off all peeved and Jenny tells Shane about not caring
blahblahblah and understanding that Shane needs it and stuff. Alice looks
on sympathetically to Shane.
Next morning and only Sunset and a few more people are left dancing.
Bette congratulates Jodi on her competition victory earlier. Bette for
some reason cares about what Jodi thinks of her and Jodi's pretty low
key
about it, wishing her and Tina. This is our More You Know public service
portion of the show. Bette departs, presumably with Tina since they have
to be at the bus station to pick up Marcy.
Alice finallly asks Jamie about her feelings for Tasha. Jamie
pauses...rather lengthy and evades politically with her answer saying
she
would never do such and such and so on. Alice leaves, unhappy.
Onto the bus station, where Bette and Tina wait for Marcy. Bette's cool
with the idea of moving to New York City with Tina, figuring she can work
from there in terms of her business stuff with Kelly. So Bette and Tina
will be leaving for the East Coast.
Sunset grabs the mic, but without the Sunset garb. He states the obvious
that he's Sunset to Kit and everyone. His also known as Sonny Benson.
He's a straight man. Kit thinks he's a con-man. Well this is getting
weird. Sonny makes his move and Kit isn't sure what to do she walks away
confused. Seriously, Kit?
Back to the bus station. Marcy never arrives and the Happy Couple is
very
very sad. All cynicism aside, this is rather heartbreaking.
In the end, back at the Center it's just Alice and Tasha holding on for
dear life. Alice wants Tasha to be happy, even if it means being with
Jamie. Tasha stumbles through an, "I don't know," before saying
that she
doesn't want to let Alice go.
Sonny Sunset announces that Alice and Tasha are the Last Couple Standing.
Next week, the Finale. It shall be bittersweet on a number of levels.
