Episode Summary -- We have TWO summaries this week: Jacky and Kace.

#401: "LEGEND IN THE MAKING" (by Jacky)

We start out with a very long recap of the previous season.

Season 4 begins with a painfully long underwater scene. You'd think it were Jenny. Nope...it's Shane.

Betty them song and intro--exactly as last season, minus Dana, dammit.

Kit and Alice kick off the first scene, still at Whistler, scene of the destruction of Shane and Carmen. We learn Lara has left to take a good job in San Francisco where she'll "have her own kitchen" at a four star hotel. Kit tells Alice that Lara was afraid Alice would take Lara's leaving really hard. Alice proclaims that something "happened" to her while at Whistler and she's ready to go home...she's cut off, but she's clearly indicating she's past the Lara relationship.

Enter Jenny and Max and Helena, who was paying the bill for the party even though she had been cut off, financially by her mother. Max suggests they should all chip in, but Helena says it was all paid for in advance.

The group then attempts an "intervention" on Bette. Max offers to leave, but Kit says they need the whole "extended family." They reach Bette's cell phone, which is turned off. They leave very supportive messages, telling her they'll all stand by her so that Tina can't take the baby away from her. Jenny is the most forceful in saying that "she is your baby" and "we would do the same thing". Alice says we won't let her take the baby away from you. Helena says they'd all testify in court on Bette's behalf.

Tina walks in and cuts off their calm, supportive messages and starts yelling that she'll have Bette's ass thrown in jail and will ruin her brand new career "not to mention the rest of your fucking life." Alice disconnects the call.

Alice tells Tina that it was stupid to say those things. Tina's in a panic, wanting to know where the baby is. She tells Kit to tell Bette if she (Bette) isn't in LA when she, Tina, returns, she will call the police and have Angelica taken away from Bette, who will never see Angelica again.

Next scene: At a diner-ish place, Angelica's eating (and adorable, as usual) while Bette is on the phone with Joyce Wischnia, asking what Tina can do, worst case scenario, if she decides to be "the hypocritical monster we know she is." Bette doesn't like what she hears. She says they won't come back--maybe they'll go to Mexico. Incoming call from Bette's new boss, Phyllis. She tells her she'll be on campus Monday morning. Bette gets really stressed out about a sippy cup. :-)

Shane in the water again--she's in the ocean and emerges, fully dressed, from the surf. There's a big house on the beach--a voice calls for Shane, "I want you." Cherie Jaffe is lounging in the sun.

Shane's doing coke while Cherie tells her she's a freak, questioning "what were you thinking...marrying that ridiculous girl?" She continues making racial slurs against Carmen. Shane tries to stop her. Cherie laughs.

Helena and Alice are at the airport, where Helena learns Alice has canceled her driver. Alice tells Helena she's going to need to start differently--like she no longer has the money she no longer has. Nice lightly humorous scene in the airport.

Jenny and Max walk into Carmen's space at their house--looking at her DJ equipment. Max offers to pick up Carmen's share of the rent. Jenny says what Shane did was unforgivable. Max says she forgives Shane--and Jenny--for screwing around on her. They break up. "You identify as a straight man, so there's the mismatch..." says Jenny.

Tina's pounding on a door, back in LA. Seems to be Bette's door. She says she just wants her baby back. Henry suggests it might be time to call the police.

Angelica and Bette are at a motor lodge kind of motel. Kit has found her there.

Helena's talking to a financial advisor who tells her she can get out of her lease on her gorgeous home--but she needs to leave right away. He tells her she has to figure out what she can afford for rent. She acknowledges the movie studio had been running in the red. She finds out her mother sold the studio before leaving for a private island off Antigua, "She's head over heels..."

Kit tells Angus he needs to leave..Bette doesn't want to see anyone. Kit's going to take her to Joyce's. Kit's puking from morning sickness. Lovely. Angus said he made "the appointment" for the next day, asking Kit if she's ok with it. She says it's the right decision even thought it's tough. Angus kisses her even though she's puked. What a guy!

Helena is meeting with Alice and tells her she only has one credit card with a $3500 limit--and that she won't even be able to buy a pair of shoes with that. Helena passes up a coffee refill until Alice advices her that she should take it as it is free. :-) Alice asks about Helena's $300K car, saying she could live on that for 2 years--Helena says "maybe YOU could." Oops...Mummy repossessed it. Helena says she is going to look into a Hyundai--Mummy's advice. LOL. Alice says Helena has been the most generous friend to her and she can offer her a place to stay in return. "I had no idea it would feel this warm and fuzzy being poor," cries Helena. :-) (It keeps getting better...)

The beach again. Shane in the surf again. Sigh.

Alice and Helena find Jenny. Alice suggest Jenny not read her own reviews--her book is coming out in a few days. Infomercial time ensues for the new web site business that is both in the show and in real life. Sadly, it's the longest scene of the entire episode. Cha-ching. Smart women! During the infomercial, they find a woman who's slept with more women than Shane--Papi.

Max at work. The boss asks or Jenny. Max admits they broke up. The boss then plays matchmaker for Max and his daughter, Brooke.

"I'm glad you decided to come," Joyce Wischnia says to Tina, with Bette and Angelica behind her. Tina is thrilled to see the baby. She takes the baby from Bette's arms. Bette is on the verge of tears.

Max is at a support group for women transitioning to men. He finds out he's jeopardizing his health--and friendships--taking far too much testosterone weekly. The group members give him a doctor's phone number.

Knock down, drag out. Bette and Tina lay it on the line. Tina can't believe Bette feels that she is untrustworthy. Bette points out that Tina scampered back to "the safety of white heterosexual privilege." Tina says it's not safe--it's brave. She may lose all her friends "who view me as some sort of turncoat." Bette corrects her, "They don't hate you because of your sexual orientation, they hate you because you can't be trusted not to use it against me when it comes to sharing custody of our child." SCORE! Tina is ticked off about "the trust thing". She picks up the baby and heads to the door.

Joyce blocks the door. This is the scene from the preview. Joyce points out the "media bonanza" that will ensue if Bette and Tina go to court. I'm going to short cut this scene since the video is already out and about.

Max tells Jenny about the group he found...Jenny pretty much blows him off. Claude's at the door.

Tina and Henry show up at Bette's, where she, Kit and Angus are packing up Angelica. Angus reviews the schedule...she'll be with Tina for a few days, then he'll pick her up and bring her back to Bette. Tina asks if Angus will be watching Angelica while she is with her. Angus is too busy--his band just released a demo. Henry says Hazel, Mikey's sitter, will look after Angelica, too.

Bette turns Angelica over to Kit to give to Tina. She looks very upset. She tells Tina she'll type up a schedule for visitation. Tina makes a bit of a face that makes Bette question whether Tina is really going to hold up her end of the visitation agreement.

Infomercial time again. Alice back on the radio advertising their new web site, talking about Papi. She asks for Papi to contact her.

Party at Cherie Jaffe's, where she's again calling Shane "Little Freak." Shane's wasted. Cherie has more coke to wake her up.

Jenny and Claude have post-sex munchies.

Angus takes Kit to the clinic. They insist she take another regency test.

Shane can't find her car keys at Cherie's. Cherie points out that Shane came from the airport in a cab. She takes Cherie's car keys. It's a BMW, not a Jag, for those who keep track of the previous spoilers.

Back at the clinic, we find out Kit is at a pro-life clinic, where they try to strong arm, borderline kidnap her into staying to convince her not to have the abortion. Kit has a terrific feminist tirade, deservedly so.

Shane shows up at Carmen's. Her cousin says Carmen won't see her. They throw her out on her ass.

Max walks in on Jenny and Claude having sex. He says they should be getting ready for ...something. We don't know what yet.

Shane comes out of a liquor store and gets back into the car. Drinking + smoking + driving recklessly = car crash. Big one--the car is totaled, the air bag deployed, Shane's got blood on her face. She walks away.

So the place where Jenny is to be is a party for her book release, where she reads a very negative review of her book. Everyone's there. Kit and Bette are pissed about the clinic. Bette wants to burn it down. Alice suggests a Planned Parenthood benefit--"Something that won't get you 30 to life."

Tina walks in and wrongly things Helena backed away from her. She's feeling very much the (straight) pariah. Helena doesn't know what she's talking about. They talk about meeting the new studio owner. There's a bizarre exchange where Tina and Henry speculate Helena made an anti semitic remark. Tina goes back to saying she thinks Helena did back away from them. She's dreaming.

Bloody Shane finally walking around...

Jenny's book party. At first it seems like Kit will introduce Jenny...the intro fits for Jenny, and Jenny takes the stage with Kit. But then it turns into the moment some fans have been waiting several years for--Marina returns. The women bombard her with questions. She's in LA for 3 days for business--staying at the Bel Aire, "it's important to revisit the places where you faced your darkest demons" (Hint: this is one of the suicide locations from Season 2!). And she's been living in Rome. Marina says she "feels like she's interrupting something." Is her appearance at Jenny's book signing a coincidence? Discuss amongst yourselves on the discussion board. ;-) Marina heads to Jenny, who has been looking on from a short distance. She asks the room to pay attention to the "lovely and talented Jenny Schecter." Jenny shoots some daggers--and looks gorgeous at the same time.

More bloody Shane walking around.

Claude asks who Marina is. Jenny says she was her first. "Then she was very important to you?" Jenny answers, "For a minute, I guess." Marina approaches with Jenny's books, congratulating her on the book, as if she's read it. She tells Jenny she's proud of her. Jenny is not happy to see her. Marina tells her she's been touring with a group of dancers as their benefactors. Claude's interested, Jenny's not. Marina's going to be bringing them to LA. They wish each other luck. Marina leaves. Claude immediately wants to know if Jenny thinks Marina will have sex with them. Jenny immediately says no. Claude immediately says she'll ask her.

Oh for the love of God, MORE Shane walking around bloody!

Jenny and Claude find Marina in her room, speaking to someone in Italian. She hangs up the phone when she sees them. Claude and Jenny start making out. Marina reclines on the bed and watches. She steps behind Claude and they start kissing. She reaches past Claude to cup her hand behind Jenny's head. Jenny's clearly not liking this. She removes Marina's hand, leaving her to Claude. She's going to go check her New York Times review. She tells Claude to stay with Marina.

Guess what? YES! Bloody Shane walking around! But this time she's finally home, where she finds Carla, her step-mother. She's sorry Gabe has let her down. She says Gabe made Carla believe she could change him, and he convinced himself of that, too. Shane--speaking of herself--says that is where the real damage comes in. Of course, she makes Gabe's story her story. Carla says she's spent the last three days crawling on the floor, crying and vomiting. Shane says, "If I could turn back the clock, I'd spare you the bad fortune of ever knowing me." Carla goes to leave, telling her she's left her a gift on the back porch--she says it's really from your father. Shane wants to take her to a doctor. Carla tells her to go to hell. The gift on the back porch? Shane's half brother, Shay, asleep. Shane goes running after Carla, but she's gone.

KACE'S EPISODE SUMMARY

Kace's Episode Review Of Mass Destruction
The L Word Episode 401 - Legend In The Making
___________________________________________

We start off with our Season 3 Montage and...no Dana. Well it seems the
feeling was mutual on that whole, "just wanting to move on," deal. No real
Lara stuff, either in the montage and...don't get me started. The answer
to the question of ending the vicious cycle is I dunno...a happy ending?
By the way, while this montage is still going, just a quick note. Some
things I say will not be popular. Just lettin' ya know... :)

Showtime presents...WATER!!!! For a moment, I get the feeling I'm watching
the opening to that Titanic movie. And then we see Shane just sorta there
in the ocean. Kickin' back...enjoying the Pacific...and then BETTY!!!
What, no flashback to 1970something?

Yep, it's everyone's favorite theme with a neutered opening. Well, that's
what happens with Carmen and Dana no longer around. And the motorcycle
part of it's just...wrong. So wrong. I'm a sad puppy now, I HOPE YOU'RE
HAPPY!!!

Let's begin...

We pick up where Season 3 left off with Kit saying hi to Alice in her suite
at the Fairmont Hotel Ski Resort Restaurant Hair Care & Tire Center. No
Lara as she's left already...

*pause the show*

*ahem*

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just wanted to get that outta my system...now then...

*unpause the show*

Alice taking it hard? Well, some of the fans are, namely me and referring
to it as, "the Lara thing," ain't making things better. Jenny The Happy
Funtime Albatross and Max show up. Then Helena arrives and right away
she's having to get used to the whole not having money thing. They call
Bette for the Intervention thing and leave a message on the voicemail.
They all stand by Bette...'cause Tina's evil having wound up with someone
with a functioning penis. Remember...penises are evil. EVIL!!! Boo, hiss
and all that other stuff. Tina then arrives and lays it down fa' real.
FIGHT THE POWER, TINA!!! I feel bad for Tina, but I guess it's a cosmic
balance issue since Bette was in the crapper with the friends at the start
of Season 2. Now it's Tina's turn, I guess.

Bette has Angelica who's grown in the past 24 hours in terms of timeline.
Bette didn't have trouble crossing the border from Canada to the United
States. I could make a reference about terrorists here, but we'll keep
going. Bette's excited about having a job again as she talks with Phyllis,
after talking with Joyce. And we need a sippy cup!!!!

Shane emerges from the ocean. Madonna did it better, but that's Madonna.
Shane launches her cellphone into the Pacific which becomes important
later. Shane has moved on by winding up with Cherie. Y'know, if these two
had bothered to hook up back in Season 1 for good, so many problems coulda
been averted. Just goes to show ya how important some decisions can be.
Cherie puts down Carmen who has disappeared from the show...

*pause the show*

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!

Too bad that whole Teachers show never really took off. But maybe Carmen
and Lara'll both come back. If only!!!

*unpause the show*

Cherie's kinda gone off the deep end since leaving Steve, which means it's
gonna be worse for Shane.

Alice and Helena are at the airport. Helena thinks she's practical and
Alice begins the education of the new Helena. It's nice to know that with
Helena being there for Alice a year ago, now Alice is returning the favor.

Carmen's DJ'ing's stuff is left behind, simply to spite me. Jenny decides
pack up Carmen's belonging and oh by the way...Jenny's still her huggable
lovable likeable self. Max is into that whole forgiveness thing, but Jenny
is well...Jenny. And Jenny sucks. Jenny hasn't changed who she is. Well,
yeah that's the problem, Jenny!!! Jenny gives some weird rant about being
lesbian who fucks girls. Well, that's what I heard lesbians prefer to do.

Tina wants her baby back and Henry wants some baby back ribs. Yeah, I made
up the last part, but it's Henry so it's not like anyone cares...ya
heartless bastards!

Bette's in a random motel with Angelica and Kit arrives.

Helena gets a visit from Whit The Lawyer Fella. I keep wanting to refer to
him as Methos, but that's just me being a Highlander fan. In fact, this
moment provides for a fun deal for Highlander fans as both actors involved
here had something to do with the show...granted Rachel Shelley's time on
Highlander was only a couple of episodes. But it still counts. Peggy's
sold off the studio and is away on a romantic getaway with Marilyn.
Helena's being told that she needs to pack up and head out as the
landlord's ready to take it over.

Kit pukes with Angus there with her. So far, we have more puking than
intimate stuff. We also have more departures at this point. This ain't
good...but it's only the 1st Episode of Season 4, so blah blah blah. Angus
kisses Kit on the lips after she puked. Ewwwwwwwwwww....

We're now at the Planet with Alice and Helena going over the cost of items,
including shoes. I have shoes that cost 10 bucks and are comfortable (and
somewhat stylish). Alice offers to have Helena move in with her. Look at
it this way...it ain't Tina movin' in with Alice like in the first part of
Season 2.

Shane's on the beach, hangin' out and bein' all depressed. No one else
among the Group Of Friends seems to notice, either.

Alice and Helena congratulate Jenny on her book, giving me more reason to
not read books. And now we get a pimp for a website, disguised as a way of
introducing Papi as a legend...in the making. Gabby is mentioned here,
because Guin Turner's no longer around to defend herself. But Gabby shall
live on in FanFic!!! Oh yes... Jenny mentions just beforehand that she'd
never do Tina. Well, at least Tina's got that going for her. Poor Shane,
though. She went from approximately 12,000 hookups to less than a thousand.

Max's boss (the cool one) arrives in Max's office and finds out about Max
and Jenny breaking up. Wait...they were together? I know they had the
fuck buddy thing goin' on for a while, but...eh, who cares? Anyway, Max is
setup for a date with the boss's daughter. Hey, it worked well enough for
Triple H so why not?

Joyce's office as Tina sees her baby again...

Max finds a support group of transsexuals. You know what would make a
great support group? A support group for supporting characters. "Hi, I'm
Lara and I'm a supporting character." "Hi, Lara!" At least they're
expanding a bit on Max.

Bette and Tina argue in front of Joyce. Tina's at a disadvantage here, not
with a mediator who's also representing Bette legally...and also quite
possibly has a grudge over the whole not being allowed to screw her thing
back in Season 2. Joyce brings forth the harsh reality of what Bette and
Tina's legal battle and how it'll be a field day for so many groups, not to
mention the media. Bette sneaks in a low blow about qualifications for
sleeping with a biracial. I guess that would explain Bette cheating on
Tina with Candace...and then wanting to go back to her...shit...I'm
supposed to hate Tina. Damn, I can never get this right the way the
majority prefers.

Jenny's dressed up as Max talks about stuff. Claude arrives! At the end
of Season 3, I didn't give two shits about Claude. But with this moment
onward, that changes. Oh, that changes with a vengeance!

Bette's house as we have Tina and Hammerin' Henry showin' up to get
Angelica. Kit and Angus are there and more of the We're All Supposed To
Hate Tina stuff continues on. Too busy to help Tina...not too busy to help
Bette. Ah, it's good to have friends. Bette gets to type up the schedule
and stuff.

Alice still has her radio job, so good for her! The discussion is Papi as
she's still doing the Chart thing. Where the heck's Ruth? Oh yeah, Alice
is probably still doing the nightshift and Ruth probably works during the
day. Working in radio, I can understand the lack of interaction between
and daytime and nighttime.

Shane's out of it at some party where Cherie's going full-on decadent.
This ain't good for Shane, whose conscience is working overtime in the
guilt cubicle. The few Cherie/Shane 'shippers from Season 1 that still
remain probably feel slighted right now. Can't say I blame 'em, either.
Shane's not happy.

Jenny and Claude scrounge around for food and then decide to kiss, just so
we can balance the intimate stuff with the vomiting.

Kit and Angus make their way to Loving Care and right away I'm paranoid
about this. Sometimes, it's just better to deal with a hospital worker
with a needle and an attitude. Kit's told to wait.

Back at the party where Shane ignores the catering. Well, food just ain't
the same without Lara. Then again, what is? Shane finds car keys and
heads out on the road.

Kit gets bombarded with the anti-abortion people and they show an aborted
fetus. Well, that's just lovely... Thank God I wasn't eating. Kit
rightfully freaks out and she and Angus get out of there.

Shane shows up at Carmen's and something resembling West Side Story, but
without the singing and dancing happens. Shane's told to get lost...and
there's no Carmen in sight. I now understand why I drank a lot of beer
while watching this initially. It helped.

Max walks in on Jenny and Claude doing things that make me wonder what
would've happend had Gabby gotte to Jenny instead of Marina. Oh, dear
God...

Shane walks out of a liquor store and goes for a drive. This isn't gonna
end well. We get the inevitable wreck and it's a good thing the airbag was
working. Then again, after Dana dying we should be thankful they bothered
with an airbag in the car. Had that happened in Season 3, Shane woulda
probably been dead and we'd have Jane Siberry singing in the next episode.

Jenny reads a review and she's not happy about the self indulgant part.
Kit and Bette wanna get militant on the right wing clinic of love. Alice
is the voice of reason.

Tina and Hammerin' Henry say hi to Helena and Helena tries to be
courteous...despite being part of the We're Supposed To Not Be With Tina In
This Struggle thing. Helena says something about Irishmen and Henry
questions it as possible hating on Jews. Uhhh...alright, then.

Shane walks down the sidewalk. It's night. No one is mugged in the
background. Must be the New Year's spirit...

Kit gives an introduction for Jenny at her New Book thingy, but the intro
works well for the real returning old friend, Marina. MARINA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ah, the show just ain't the same without her. Marina steals Jenny's
thunder and I can't help but chuckle a little. Marina looks great in the
fedora. Jenny feels ignored. Awwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Marina's not
gonna be here long and she's back at the Bel-Air or whatever where
everything fell apart on her. Well, Ilene did tell me that there'd be no
real explanation...just a hint here and there.

Shane walks down the street...literally.

Jenny and Claude talk about Marina and we get the full Marina name. Marina
says hi and a new 'ship is born! More on that later. Marina introduces
herself to Claude and so it begins! Manfredi Ferrer and Fracnessca Wolff
have apparently ceased to exist. "Do you think she'll have sex with us?"
asks Claude. "No," replies Jenny. "Ask her." Heheheh, awesome. Give it
up to Claude, she's got drive.

Shane is...still walking. And she's hoping that someone actually remembers
her.

Jenny and Claude arrive at Marina's room to tease a 3-way. Now that's just
unfair. Jenny and Claude begin with the kissing as Marina watches. I
guess she's finally over Jenny. Claude and Marina then kiss. And Jenny
feels like the third wheel and leaves. ALL HAIL CLAUDE AND MARINA!!!!
Whoda thunkit that my favorite 'ship of choice after the first ep of Season
4 would be Claude and Marina??? We're off to a weird-ass start, ya know
that???

Time for the finale to the beginning as Shane shows up to see Carla
waiting. Carla talks about Gabe leaving her and trying to call Shane. But
Shane's phone is in the ocean, remember. Shane shares with us some
parallels between herself and her birthfather. Carla's down in the dumps
and seems to have lost all faith. Poor dear. Carla leaves, but not before
mentioning that there's a gift waiting for Shane on the backporch. The gift
turns out to be Shay, Shane's little brother. Shane freaks out.

Welcome to Season 4. Please place both hands on the rail and prepare for a
crazy ass ride. It's about to get might interestin'!

Good episode. Not great, not bad. But definetly good and the
Claude/Marina 'ship is settin' sail, baby!

Discuss the episode and share your thoughts on the rest of Season 4!

NON-Spoiler Version

Alice hooks up with "web-famous" seductress Papi; a gay writer gets Jenny to open up in an interview; Bette's new dean confides in her. The new head of the studio gets Tina to do some of his dirty work. Max has a date with the boss' daughter.

SPOILER VERSION:

Shane tries to find Shay's parents and enlists the help of Max to do a computer search to track down their father who's disappeared.

Jenny lets down her guard with Stacey (Heather Matarazzo), a journalist from Curve Magazine, who writes a scathing review of her book. After reading it, Jenny freaks out on everyone around her, including Shay who runs away.

Max gets set up with the boss' daughter Brooke (Chelsea Hobbs) and the date becomes too heated. The couple gets interrupted by Brooke's father, which in some ways comes as a relief to Max.

An inconsolable Kit goes to Bette for comfort and sisterly love.

Bette's job as the new Dean at California University's Arts College gets more than she bargained as she finds she has a slew of young admirers, including a pretty blonde TA, Nadia (Jessica Capshaw), who'll do anything to work for Bette.

Bette has her hands full dealing with her formidable new boss Phyllis Kroll (Cybill Shepherd).

With Tina's job at stake, her new boss gives her the ugly task of having to be the one to tell Helena the studio is letting her go.

Alice takes in Helena as a roommate and discovers that Papi (Janina Gavankar), the new hot lesbian lover in town, has no sexual limits.
