 Luminous

Summary by Stacy Turner

The opening scene is some sort of a dream sequence. Jenny’s writing teacher and another male student from her class are walking in the streets of Paris looking for a prostitute. They come across Jenny who has short blonde hair. The couple ask her if she would be willing to have sex with both of them. Jenny asks if his wife wants to be with a women and if she can satisfy her right before the sequence ends.

Alice and Dana wake up in bed together. Alice tells Dana that they have to do it, to which Dana responds that they did it all night long. The girls laugh and Alice tells her that they need to tell theirs friends that they are a couple.

Mark is outside talking on his phone. Jenny walks outside and sits on the porch, and when Mark is off the phone he joins her. He asks Jenny if she knows what it is about Shane that makes her the way she is. He asks her if it’s because she is good in bed, to which Jenny says that she doesn’t know. Mark asks if she is curious to find out and Jenny says no that they are just good friends. He then mentions Carmen and asks if she has ever mentioned anything about Shane. Jenny gets up tells him that he is weirder than herself and leaves.

Helena and Tina are laying down in bed together. Helena starts kissing Tina’s neck and then her hand disappears beneath the covers. Tina gasps and then starts to smile and tells Helena that she likes getting woken up this way. In the middle of this the door opens and Helena’s kids run inside and jump on the bed. Helena rolls over and starts playing with the kids, while Tina looks away. Helena continues to have sex with Tina while the kids are in the room and Tina tells her to stop. Helena tells the kids to go wake someone up and ask them to take them to get some food. When the kids leave Tina tells her that she was freaked out by what just happened. Helena changes the subject and tells Tina that she wants her to come with her and the children to Sea World.

Bette meets the new guy that is helping do fundraisers for the CAC. He tells her that they should try and work together, but Bette tells him that she has done it on her own for many years and she doesn’t want to work with him. He then mentions how he met Tina when she was with Helena and they were really excited about the baby. Bette looks upset and walks out the door into her office. She calls Tina and leaves a message for her telling her that she would appreciate if she would return some of her calls, and that she really needs for some kind of resolution before the baby is born.

Shane walks into a meeting where Veronica Bloom is yelling on a phone. It seems as if a director has decided to drop out of her film and she is really upset. She starts throwing things and people are scrambling around to pick things up. She tells everyone to leave, but tells Shane to stay. She asks Shane why people always let you down, no matter how much you do for them. Shane responds by saying that she tries not to need anything from anyone. Veronica asks her to teach her how to do that.

Jenny begins writing another story entitled “Luminous”. We cut to see her in class reading off the last few lines. Her teacher asks if anyone had any comments about Jenny’s story. A student says that he thought it was amazing and compares the writing style to another author. The teacher and student start to somewhat flirt with each other and Jenny rolls her eyes.

Shane and Veronica are at a spa. Veronica is laying on a table getting a facial peel removed. She asks Shane why she shouldn’t become a lesbian. Shane tells her that women are just too intense. Veronica tells her that she likes things to be intense, when they aren’t she gets so bored that she can kill herself.

Bette goes to see an art studio. The girl that did all the artwork takes her around and shows her work. Bette asks why she has never seen any of her stuff before, and the artist says that she has been trying to get her in there for a while. Bette asks the girl if she has heard of the Planet, and asks if she would like to go with her later on. As they are talking another girl walks in and we find out that the artist is not single. She asks if her girlfriend can some also, and Bette says yes.

Alice and Dana are walking together holding hands at the same place that they made the infamous “Rules of Unattraction”. They start talking about who they invited to the Planet. Dana said that she invited Shane, Jenny and Carmen and Alice invited Bette and Tina. Alice starts talking about how she wants to tell everyone about them at the same time. Dana tells her that Shane already knows, but Alice tells her that Shane is the only one that can keep a secret.

Tina walks into the Helena’s living room and finds the kids watching cartoons. Tina tells them that it’s a beautiful day outside and they should be doing other things than staying inside. She gives them some art materials and they are really happy. Helena walks inside and tells the kids that she would like to spend some time with Tina alone. They go outside and Helena starts kissing Tina. We cut to see a women walking up to the house. When she comes inside the kids get really excited and we find out that it’s the kids other mother. She walks outside on the balcony and finds Helena and Tina having sex. Helena looks up and introduced them. Later Helena and her ex are fighting about how Helena was supposed to have the kids back to her earlier that day. Tina walks in to grab something and then she leaves.

Shane is at Veronica’s house and she hears Veronica on the phone yelling at her ex husband. Shane runs upstairs to see what is going on. She finds a lot of pill bottle upstairs and gives Veronica some of them. Veronica tells her that she wants her to lay in bed with her and watch a movie. Shane tells her that she has to leave because her friends need her. Veronica tells her that she can’t leave, and that she has to do what she tells her. Shane walks away and leaves.

Bette is sitting down at a table with the artist and her girlfriend that she invited. One of the girls from Betty walks over and tells her that there is a group of girls over by the bar that are talking about her. They all think that she is a hot item, so she wanted to warn her. When she leaves another girl walks up to her and tells her that she met Bette and now she would like to date her. Bette looks shocked and the artist tells her that she has been retagged.

Alice and Dana are in Alice’s car on their way to the Planet. They are still trying to figure out how to tell their friends that they are together. Dana tells Alice that they should just tell them that nothing has changed between them. They still hang out every day and night, but now they are just having incredible, mind blowing, earth shattering sex. Both of the girls start smiling, and Alice and Dana look at the time and see that they are early. Alice pulls the car over and they have sex.

Tina enters the Planet and sees a bunch of girls swarming around Bette. Kit walks up to Tina and tells her to go sit by her. She sits down and apologizes to Bette for not calling her back, and asks if they can talk about it after the weekend passes. Bette says that is fine but looks away a little upset.

Shane walks into the Planet and sees Carmen and Jenny behind the DJ booth kissing and flirting. Shane looks upset and then walks toward the door. Alice and Dana show up at the Planet right as Shane is leaving. Shane tells them that everyone is inside and tells them to go for it. As they walk inside a spotlight is shown on them, and Carmen announces Alice and Dana as a happy new couple. The girls look shocked and happy that people already know. Carmen plays a song for them and Dana and Alice slow dance with each other. At the end of the dance Alice and Dana are in the corner of the Planet kissing as if they are the only ones there.

Jenny and Carmen are in the kitchen kissing. Shane walks in with twins and looks in the refrigerator. She grabs something out and then they go into her room. Carmen tells Jenny that maybe they should do this again another time and Jenny kisses her on the cheek and tells her that she understands. We see that Mark is watching Shane and the girls in her room. The twins are on the bed and Shane is sitting on a chair. The girls tell her to come over but Shane refuses to.

Helena shows up at Tina’s work and starts talking to her about what happened the other night. Helena tells her that Winnie was the one that had one of their children, but Helena helped plan everything so she should be apart of his life too. Hearing that you can see a look on Tina’s face that helps her realize that Bette should be involved in their child’s life also.

Jenny is in her room and there is a knock at the door. The door opens and it’s Carmen. She tells Jenny that she doesn’t know why she left last night, to which Jenny responds that it’s because she likes Shane. Carmen tells her that she doesn’t fall for unavailable people, but Jenny tells her that you can’t help who you fall for. Jenny and Carmen wind up in bed together and have sex. Jenny leaves and Shane is on the couch. Carmen tells Shane that she cares for her, but she isn’t going to wait around for her.

Jenny is in class and she comments on one of the stories that another student wrote. At the end of class Jenny’s teacher tells her that her comments were unnecessary. Jenny tells her that she has been criticized a lot and that as a writer you must be able to take it. Her teacher tells her that she is going to give her another assignment and asks her to call one of her friends that use to be an action star. Jenny asks why she wants her to do this assignment and she tells her that he needs help writing something and Jenny is her most gifted student and she thinks that she can help him.

Mark gets a call from someone while he is working on editing his documentary. He tells the other person on the line to wait for him and he will be there in twenty minutes. When Mark gets to his destination he is looking around for someone. He finally spots Shane who is being held by two security men. Shane is squirming around and one of the guys punches her. Mark runs over and starts hitting the guys and tells them that Shane is a girl.

Bette comes home and listens to a message on her answering machine. It’s Tina and she tells Bette that they conceived of the baby together and she definitely wants Bette to be apart of the babies life.

Music, including Scene by Scene breakdown by Kace of What the L Radio!)

Sharon Isbin "Zapateado"
Takes a little while, but we finally get to the first song of the show that doesn't involve EZGirl's Score stuff. And she performs the song LIVE at The Planet. Can't really make any comments here, other than it's a solo acoustic guitar stuff. Good mood music...not something to listen to while playing a Grand Theft Auto game.

Bonobo "Magicman"
Plays in the background at The Planet as Sharon (putting her guitar away) shows interest in Bette. This is a change of pace from Sharon's music, actually. It's that whole R&B sound that tends to occassionally run rampant throughout Season 2.

Girl Nobody "Smile & Beware (Stef & 16Bit Lolita Remix)"
Now we liven up the mood at The Planet with some good, upbeat stuff. Meanwhile, Bette's a hot item as more girls show interest in her.

Grandadbob "Mmmnn"
Available on The L Word Season 2 Soundtrack. At The Planet (of course) as Carmen shows Jenny the ropes of DJ'ing. I'm so glad Tony Tone never showed me how to DJ using those techniques.... Sarah Shahi on the other hand is more than welcome to.

Natasha Thirsk "Number 1"
The Carmen & Jenny Duo (Carmenny?) segue us to this Modern Rock bit of goodness. Shane walks in, sees Jenny and Carmen and leaves. 'Course, as soon as Alice and Dana enter, the music stops.

Shirley Bassey "Where Do I Begin (Away Team Remix)"
Seconds later, we get this song. Y'know...it's just a couple of episodes ago that Dana was having a Bachelorette party in that same building. Now she's showing off the new love. I ain't complainin', though so it's all good. Also available on the Season 2 Soundtrack. If you can, get the original version which is Shirley in the purest form. Good remix and Shirley's voice is powerful.

The Capitals "The Other Girl"
Plays on as background music in Shane's room as two girls do whatever on her and she proceeds to tank herself into oblivion. Thanks to the power that is the hidden camera, Mark watches on. It's rock music, but I couldn't give ya an honest assessment of the song to be honest, based on its use in the show here.

Nasty "On Apology"
Playing loudly at Jenny's as Jenny answers the phone, Carmen's just there....and Shane's bummed out on the couch. Why couldn't Carmen turn the radio off when Jenny was having to yell into the phone? Basic loud rock stuff, helping to equal things out with the usual R&B stuff from the Planet.

Quick note about Jenny. Yes, she does know what's she's talking about, Ms. Birch. For further confirmation though, just ask that officer fella from the Season 1 Lawfully episode.

Leonard Cohen "Coming Back To You"
Plays at the end as Bette FINALLY receives a glimmer of hope at the end of the episode. 'Bout time... Sounds familiar to Nick Cave to me for some reason, but it's alright. AND we roll the credits.
